Al Vonderahe, LMT
Al is an old-timer in the Profession, and has been committed to “Touch Medicine” for a bit over a half-Century! Now, with his Wife and partner, Cathy,..also a Massage Therapist, and two other employed Massage Therapists, their busy practice, “Sparta Massage Therapy,” is beginning its 25th Year.
As a young Adult, Al dabbled and studied the rich and ancient history of “Hands-On Healing” with great interest in both Eastern and Western approaches. Then, in mid-Life, he decided to commit to this Profession, and he enrolled in The Somerset School of Massage Therapy to earn a certification. With a goal of providing only remedial Therapy, and a recognition that he needed comprehensive fundamentals, he followed graduation with immediate in-depth study, earning certifications in Neuromuscular and Myofascial modalities. His “Graduate” studies included classes with The Rolf Institute, Orthopedic Assessment with Whitney Lowe, NeuroMuscular Therapy, with Leon Chaitow, D.O., and Judith Walker Delaney, Myofascial Therapy with Robert King, Trager Work, Cranial-Sacral Therapy, and several other introductory courses. Al considers himself “a Lifetime Student,” and seeks out any other point of perspective that he thinks might add something to his therapeutic arsenal.
Al’s graduation from Somerset coincided with a popular groundswell of enthusiasm amongst his fellow Therapists, and he volunteered. This led to eleven Years of participation in the molding and passing of both Statutes that govern our Profession in New Jersey. For several Years, he was the Chair of The Massage, Bodywork, and Somatic Therapies Committee for the Division of Consumer Affairs, and later worked as a Trustee on The Massage and Bodywork Committee.
Now, at the pinnacle of his career, with a bit more than 40,000 hours and a “Grand Master” status.
Al has evolved his own approach. He calls himself an “American Bodyworker,” or a “BioMechanic.” His schooling and his experience, coupled with the fact that he works on people clothed, sets him apart. His calendar speaks to the success of “The Vonderahe Way.” He is always a little too booked, and always with referrals. He hasn’t advertised in Years. Currently, as the hourglass gets bottom heavy, Al wants to pass on the fruits of his efforts… Don’t wait too long!
