We will review the psychological & emotional impacts of breast cancer and treatments, the role of the therapist, emotional issues of therapist, the client interview, physical assessment, documentation, breast cancer in men, anatomy & physiology of the breast, pathology, causes, theories and treatments. Students will learn the side effects of surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy specific to breast cancer. We review what lymphedema is, its causes, treatments, precautions, prevention and proper treatment during a massage session. We review the directives for breast surgery, drains, incisions, scar tissue, mobility. We will demonstrate a safe, effective massage session and students will be hands-on to exchange and practice their new skills to ensure the safety of their clients who have had mastectomy surgeries and/or with lymphedema of the arm. We review positioning, draping, modifications, nuances and use of props.
We’ll address contraindications, anatomy and physiology, positioning, draping, massage techniques, legal issues, and documentation.
This training is open to all levels of massage and bodywork practitioners – especially those interested in cancer care. Cancer Techniques are good for use on frail and elderly people, as well as for hospice care.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will understand the psychological & emotional impacts of breast cancer and treatments on their clients.
- Students will understand the importance of the client interview and intake process, as well as the importance of medical clearance from the medical treating team.
- Participants learn a proper physical assessment of the client to ascertain the appropriate modifications needed to ensure a safe and effective session.
- Students will understand the anatomy and physiology of breast tissue, as well as the pathology, causes of breast cancer, theories and safe treatment.
- Participants will understand the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries on their clients undergoing breast cancer treatment.
- Students will learn the causes and effects of lymphedema on the client with breast cancer and how to safely treat the area, or potentially contraindicate the area.
- Participants will understand indications, contraindications, modifications, draping, documentation and medical clearances needed to safely treat clients undergoing breast cancer treatment.
- Students will be confident to treat their clients undergoing breast cancer treatment.
