| COURSE OFFERINGS: Total Course Hours 653 WESTERN AND EASTERN MASSAGE
THERAPIES: 275 Hours
SWEDISH MASSAGE & Hydrotherapy: The classic Swedish massage is fluid, flowing and graceful. Our emphasis on body mechanics and energy optimization will enable graduates to approach their final massage of the day with the same vigor with which they approached their first. We will also be covering instruction in the therapeutic use of water, heat, cold and various theraputic devices and equipment.
MEDICAL MASSAGE/CLINICAL BODYWORK: This course consists of a synthesis of Eastern and Western massage, Neuromuscular/Deep Tissue bodywork and various somatic therapies. The practice of utilizing these therapies in a professional and appropriate manner, for the most common soft tissue complaints, will be thoroughly explored, reviewed and practiced. TRADITIONAL BAREFOOT SHIATSU: Japanese for "finger pressure," this method of massage is a form of Asian energetic bodywork that has been practiced for centuries. This technique of massage allows the therapist to access Chi, or life-force energy, via the meridian system. Shiatsu is a full body protocol that has powerful, long-lasting effects, making it an essential tool for the massage therapist. ON-SITE CHAIR MASSAGE: Very popular, chair massage can be utilized in a wide variety of on-site situations. Students will be instructed on how to use a massage chair that comfortably supports the clients while performing a refreshing massage to the neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands. This treatment is done right through the clothes and makes a great promotional tool. It can also produce a great addition to their practice as the therapist is hired to perform chair massage in the workplace and/or special events. BUSINESS PRACTICE MANAGEMENT: Along with instructing students in basic business skills such as record keeping, money management, marketing and ethics, we train our students, throughout the entire course, to identify client needs to assist them in developing an effective massage practice. PATHOLOGY: 40 Hours. This course is interwoven with the Anatomy and Physiology course to give the student an in depth understanding of disease and injury as the apply to the scope of practice of a professional massage therapist.
ANATOMY/PHYSIOLOGY and KINESIOLOGY: 125 Hours. This two-part course is designed to familiarize the massage therapy student with the structure and function of the human body. Our exploration of the material involves an overview of the systems of the body and an intensive study of bones, muscles and nerves. The student will also learn the relationships of the muscular and skeletal systems to posture, movement and health.
STUDENT MASSAGE INTERNSHIP: Prior to graduation, students shall have completed the following: Student Clinic: The Student Clinic serves our local community and provides supervised opportunities for students to practice their skills on a wide variety of clients. These interactions provide an opportunity to increase professional self-confidence while polishing their business, technical and interpersonal skills. Please note: students are required to attend clinic for the complete duration of school term; completing but not limited to 48 hours. Any student that misses a clinic without notifying the school a full 24 hours in advance will have to make up the time missed by doing two (2) clinics for each one missed. These extra clinics are to be made up after the end of the term and must be completed to receive a diploma. Events: (6 events) Our school participates in a variety of community events, both hands-on and in lecture format, allowing the students to gain additional public and organizational skills.
Graduate and Staff Evaluations: A passing grade is required on all evaluations. *3 massages weekly throughout the course; done on professionals, etc. NUTRITIONAL AWARENESS (5 hours/within A&P course): Food is the essential source of fuel and building materials for our bodies. Diet is fundamental to the Asian medical model of well being. Understanding the role of diet in our health will assist the therapist and his/her clients in maintaining wellness.
CPR AND FIRST AID (8 hours): Adult CPR and First Aid will be taught by an instructor qualified to teach by the American Red Cross. Students will become certified in CPR and first aid prior to graduation.
T'AI CHI QI GONG (12 hours): Developed in China over many centuries, T'ai Chi Qi Gong is known for its profound health benefits. A series of flowing movements combined with deep breathing and meditation techniques, it promotes strength, balance, and coordination, all of which assist the student in the practice of massage therapy.
YOGA (12 hours): A system of deep stretching
postures, Yoga allows the body to balance and rejuvenate, producing a
calm, healthy mind and body. All of our instructors study and teach Asian
Healing Arts alongside the rich variety of Yoga forms. A wonderful complement
to the student's study of body structure, function, and mechanics as well
as to the study of acupressure points and energy dynamics. Law........6 Hours
