NOBODY TREATS LOWER BACK PAIN MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN A MEDICAL MASSAGE THERAPIST!
Now there is a successful protocol you can follow to treat it!

The 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study (Lancet) stated that low back pain is among the top 10 diseases and injuries that account for the highest number of years lost to ill health and disability worldwide. Low back pain is the leading cause of activity limitation and work absence throughout much of the world, imposing a high economic burden on individuals, families, communities, industry, and governments. In the United States, an estimated 149 million work days are lost every year because of low back pain, with total costs estimated to be in the US between $100 to 200 billion a year (of which two thirds is due to lost wages).

The number one complaint massage and manual therapists address is with the lower back. Wouldn’t it be great to have a go-to protocol that works so well that whenever your clientele has back complaints they choose you as their first line of defense? Join school director Larry Heisler in this two-day hands-on workshop that specifically addresses lower back complaints. Larry will take you through all the aspects of his protocol exploring causes, contributing factors, contraindications, long term strategies and more.

“I have performed over 60,000 massage hours on thousands of world class athletes since 1975. The number one complaint I have treated in my entire career is lower back pain. It took me many years to develop and understand but I now have a very specific and successful protocol that combines deep tissue muscle stripping, trigger point therapy, myofascial stretches, shiatsu power points and hydroculator steam packs. You will learn the entire process of my treatment protocol.”

"Larry is one of the premier massage therapists in New Jersey with a lifetime of clinical experience. His hands-on approach to soft tissue complaints with medical massage and specifically for lower back issues is unparalleled!”

Craniosacral Integration Module I
with Annette Joubert, LMT

Saturday, April 21
Wednesday, September 5

8 Ce Hours   9:30-6pm   $175

Course Difficulty Level   Beginner

Course Description:  Craniosacral Therapy is a whole-body hand on application of gentle palpation, traction, compression, and rocking.  With this modality you can relieve or “release” the stress and restrictions that may impair nervous system function.  Dr. Sutherland, an Osteopath in the 1950’s was the father of craniosacral therapy in the United States.  It was designed as a systematic approach gentle touch to bring balance to the central nervous system.  Craniosacral work is not a diagnosis.  It is a way to listen to the patient body and optimize functional movement with little force.  During a session the body is free to move into new space and increase range of motion.  Patients enjoy a calming experience. The subtle movements and relaxation assist the body’s natural self-correcting mechanism.

This work is intended for adult patients only. This module I introduces the massage therapist to the application of craniosacral techniques at a basic level of palpation and assessment.

Learning Outcomes:  Practitioners upon completion of this module will be able to incorporate craniosacral techniques from a holistic approach and be able to utilize protocols of both Dr. Upledger and Hugh Milne into a massage session.

Deep Tissue Massage:
The Science of Massage Strokes Parts 1 & 2
along with anatomical features, landmarks and addressing common soft tissue pathologies.
with William Burton, Jr., B.A., LMT, CMCE
Two classes, one day each.
Each day is: 10am-6pm, 8 credits, $175

Part 1:  Sat, Feb 17th  Sat, Aug 18th
Part 2:  Sun, Feb 18th  Sun, Aug 19th

If you are still doing the massage routine you learned by rote from the massage school you went to, you are not a massage therapist yet.
Practitioner YES, Therapist NO.

And if you think deep tissue massage is that same Swedish massage you learned in school, just done deeper,
once again…you are not a massage therapist yet and that’s not deep tissue massage.
True Deep Tissue Massage is about understanding the proper usage of a sophisticated arsenal of strokes utilized at the appropriate time with a specific intention.

LET’S FACE IT… People want a real deep tissue massage.
This is where the money is.

And we have a man from Philadelphia that can help you make deep tissue part of your vocabulary.
Join us as William Burton, Jr. teaches you how it’s done:

·                Define the seven massage strokes used in a typical Massage session.

·                Discuss the characteristics of our Massage strokes.

·                Define our “tools” used in a typical massage session.

·                Review body mechanics and how to save our hands and backs.

·                Discuss some of the do’s and don’ts of a deep tissue session.

The Deep Tissue Massage Therapy Facial
for all Health Care Providers
with Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT
1 day, 9:30am to 6:00pm, 8 credits, $175.00

Thur, Mar 29th
Thur, July 19th

Making someone look and feel significantly younger is really good for your business!

The Deep Massage Therapy Facial is not the typical facial received at a salon by a cosmetologist or an esthetician, rather it is one uniquely designed for us, the massage therapist.
It is our belief that combining deep tissue massage with organic skin care products is a great idea! It seems like every time I have gotten a facial or a hot stone treatment, afterwards, I would walk out so relaxed that I could hardly talk but that would just make me more aware of how tight and stiff my body was. If I could just get someone to address the aches and pains along with taking my brain away… well, you get the idea. What’s even more exciting is that as you dramatically increase circulation to shoulders, neck and face, using our specially designed deep tissue techniques, you make your client look significantly younger. Add some wonderful foot and hand massage and an aroma rich hot towel facial hydrotherapy and voila;
“TOTAL NIRVANA!”

We will teach you all the components of a great facial massage including the creation of and a` la carte menu of services for your office practice – from the equipment and supplies needed, to the actual application of products with the strokes and techniques utilized.   As massage therapists, we do not do extractions, we do not analyze or diagnose skin problems and we do not treat or prescribe products. We stay completely within the scope of our practice and frankly, it’s the best thing that can happen to someone’s face because the results speak for themselves. Deep tissue massage combined with organic skin care is the fountain of youth and we will show you how to master it. Join us for this all day, hands-on presentation with its creator, our very own, Larry Heisler.
Dramatically increase your earning potential and offer your clients these valuable additional services.

“Excellent Class as always!  You will not be disappointed and neither will your clients!”
Anastasia, LMT

Thu, May 31st

Specializing in headaches can be a very good business decision, and an even better hands-on choice!

Over 45 million Americans (about one in six) suffer chronic headaches each year.  Headaches therefore have a big economic impact -- when you have a throbbing pain in your head, it's hard to work.  The cost of these headaches in absenteeism and medical expenses is estimated as high as $50 billion per year.  Annually, people seeking treatment for headache pain account for 8 million consultations with physicians.  There are multiple causes of headaches and while most of these causes are not in the domain of massage therapy, tension and structural causes which account for many, are.  Join us for a comprehensive look at headaches and a surefire treatment plan for headache sufferers regardless of the cause.  We have created a sophisticated massage therapy protocol for headache relief combining medical massage techniques like trigger point therapy, connective and deep tissue bodywork with traditional shiatsu for the neck, shoulders and upper back.

“Great class! Opened my eyes to so many new techniques, especially practitioner saving techniques!!” Angie Pyatt, LMT

 The Ultimate Hot Stone Class
with Kathy McCready, LMT
9:30am to 6:00pm, 8 credits, $200.00

Sat, Dec 1st
Sat, Oct 13th

Learn with a Master Hot Stone Expert…
ADDING HOT STONES CAN GIVE YOUR MASSAGE PRACTICE A REAL BOOST!
It’s not just the increased revenue, which is nice; it’s also about how well the ability to use heated stones to sculpt muscle and provide exceptional deep tissue work fits into a great massage therapy session. Unfortunately, many facilities here in New Jersey have been cautious about offering Hot Stone Massage lately, and with good reason: many burns and injuries have been reported. As the longest-running massage school in NJ we are very experienced at maintaining awareness of what is happening in our industry. To counter the bad press and a recent rash of insurance mandates we are excited to offer a small, personalized Hot Stone training that will more than fulfill the recent educational requirements added by professional massage organizations. Our instructor, Kathy McCready, has unparalleled experience and training. After studying with Mary Nelson, who in 1993 re-invented hot stone massage and brought it out of obscurity and into popularity, Kathy became lead Hot Stone therapist for an illustrious FIVE Diamond Hotel. There she developed their signature approach to Hot Stone therapy where it was applied by many therapists performing multiple sessions per day. She has taught our entire staff here at New Jersey Massage, and the education was exceptional. From a brief history of hot stone usage and a comprehensive review of protocols needed to set up a great practice, to the specific routines you will employ and the specialized therapeutic techniques you will learn, Kathy will help you develop and successfully administer a hot stone practice.

We’ve got your hot stone education covered!

Lomi Lomi – Hawaiian Temple Bodywork
Parts 1 and 2
with Bianca Franchi, LMT, NCTMB
Two classes, one day each.
Each day is: 9:30am to 5:00pm, 7 credits, $175.00

Lomi Lomi 2,  Mon, Dec 17th     Mon, Jun 25th     Wed, Apr 11th   Tue, Sept 4th

Join us for the day to explore this sacred form of Hawaiian bodywork. Although the term kahuna lomilomi is widely used in contemporary writings, traditionally the people who performed lomilomi were called ka poʻe lomilomi (the massage people) or kanaka lomi (massage person).
In the Hawaiian language, the word lomi means to knead, rub or soothe, to work in and out. The massage session is filled with beautiful, long, sweeping strokes similar to a Hula dance. In fact, as part of the Lomi training you will learn the traditional Hula dance. You might have heard that Lomi can really save your hands. Well…it does. A lomi session is revered for its spiritual healing results. Participants during this primarily hands-on workshop will explore the Hawaiian principles for conscious touch and learn some of the great energetic healing techniques performed in an actual Lomi Lomi session. You will have plenty of time to learn it and practice on each other.

You’ll discover lymphatic A&P in a new and exciting way that brings meaning to the words: detoxification, weight loss and more.

Ultimate Medical Massage Series:

Thu, Apr 5th
Thu, Aug 2nd

This class will dramatically change the way you view and approach bodywork! For the better…

It’s very rare that massage therapists talk about the internal organ structure, the acupuncture lines and their relationship to the musculature unless you are studying acupuncture or taking a course like shiatsu. But the truth is in both eastern Oriental Medicine and western Applied Kinesiology, it is taught that the acupuncture energetic system, a.k.a. the meridian lines, directly influence the strength and integrity of the muscles. In fact, the meridian lines are treated as extensions of the internal organs. So, if the Gall Bladder is overworked because last night we partied an ate way too much fat as in a large ice cream sundae or consumed way too much alcohol, anywhere that gall bladder meridian runs in your body, those muscles will be compromised and susceptible to injury. Did you ever wake up with a stiff neck and you said I must have slept wrong or caught a draft? Well since the neck is related to the gall bladder, there might have been another possibility, too much pizza and beer. In addition, the gall bladder meridian runs down into the rhomboids, as in those inter-scapular knots we see so often, and it runs right down the hips into the IT Band.
DO YOU SEE WHAT WE’RE GETTING AT?
If you know what foods and lifestyle habits control the meridians and what muscles are directly associated with those meridians, you’ll know something so profound that it will dramatically influence how you approach your massage therapy from this day on! And that’s exactly what this class is going to teach. This presentation will change your entire perspective on how you approach bodywork.

“This is a must class for not only massage therapists but for all wellness practitioners. It is fresh, inspired, and original clinical information.”
Margaret Alviggi, R.N., BSN, past recipient, Governor’s Award, New Jersey Nurse of the Year

Face & Abdominal Massage

with Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT
1 day, 9:30am to 6:00pm, 8 credits, $175.00

Fri, Mar 16th
Thu, Jun 28th

Amazingly effective rare massage approaches from the Orient!

This remarkable class addresses both the core of your client and their face, scalp and head. Core work or internal organ work is called Ampuku in Japan, Tui Na in China or Chi Nei Tsang in Korea. It uses the energy and martial arts principles of Qi-Gong/Chi-Kung as it comprises gentle, non- invasive visceral massage with energetic breath techniques and specific, very powerful abdominal acupressure BO points. Traditional Ampuku often results in a profound sense of wellbeing, deep, deep relaxation and/or a cleansing, detoxifying stimulation. In Taoist circles, it is used to simultaneously heal the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual and is revered for its immune boosting qualities.

Our face, scalp and head work includes our ever-popular Acupressure Face Lift, assuring that your clientele will look younger and feel fresher after your session with them,
once again significantly adding to your repertoire, effectiveness and of course your
“Bottom Line.”

“I have never seen these great techniques taught anywhere and they have significantly improved the quality of what I offer my patients. I am continually amazed at the level of excellence Larry and his school offers. Thank you!”
Theresa Menagh., R.N., LMT

The secret to a great massage is sometimes found in the humblest of places!

Foot and hand work is something most massage therapists are weak in. For whatever reason, most schools gloss over this very important part to your massage. At our school, we teach that good foot and hand work can be the difference between a satisfied client and one that will go elsewhere. This class will help you hone your foot and hand work, giving you a new, fresh approach that will have your clients returning again and again for more. Our deep tissue approach includes the neuromuscular trigger point work that will help eradicate pain and tension as in addressing plantar fasciitis or arthritic hand complaints and combine the most powerful shiatsu points on the legs and arms, feet and hands. The acupuncture/acupressure points in Japan are known as tsubos.  The specific tsubos called the Go, Gen, Sei points are one the secrets to an extraordinary session in Japanese shiatsu or Chinese Tui Na. This is not a reflexology class that requires a completely different serious course of study. The combination of trigger points and shiatsu makes it some of the most powerful foot and hand massage work you’ll ever experience.

You will dig this class and so will your hands and feet!

“Teacher excellent, he’s a master of his art. This was an excellent course!”

Something Fresh and New for you to Add to your Repertoire!

This gentle, manual biomechanical mobilization technique places the client’s body in a comfortable position for 90 seconds which in turn allows the body to reset the problem muscle to normal, thereby setting the stage for the condition to resolve and heal itself.
This therapeutic approach is based on the idea that each person and each pain is “one of a kind.” Since the way people store pain is unique, effective treatment must take that uniqueness into account. This course has not been available for massage therapists in any of the continuing education programs available today. Now you have a chance to learn this very simple yet powerful technique that you can teach your clients for their self-care.

“Great course, I learned a lot.” Ann Henry, LMT

How to Effectively Treat Inter-Scapular Knots in the Rhomboids
with Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT
one day, 9:30am to 6:00pm, 8 credits, $175.00

Fri, Jul 27th
Thu, Oct 4th

NOBODY TREATS SHOULDER KNOT PAIN MORE EFFECTIVELY THAT A MEDICAL MASSAGE THERAPIST!

Now there is a successful protocol you can follow to treat it!

In my experience, the knots found at the medial borders of the scapula are among the top five most frequently mentioned soft tissue complaints. It could be on either side of your client’s body, and by referring all over it mimics many other complaints in the shoulders, neck, lats, etc. I work on this specific condition on a daily basis and it drives my client’s crazy. It’s that chronic low grade pain, day in and day out for months and sometimes years that wears them down. The only modality I have ever seen effective against trigger points in the rhomboids is medical massage. It’s what separates us from all the other modalities.
Soft tissue complaints require a soft tissue solution and we are soft tissue experts!

During any given year, a handful of my clients will check themselves into the local emergency room thinking that they might be experiencing a serious cardio issue. They can’t take a deep breath without pain or lift their arm up, and they invariably start thinking it’s something big. After a thorough medical examination, they are routinely told that they have a pinched nerve or a trigger point firing in their scapular region and are prescribed either an anti-inflammatory, a pain killer, or sent for physical or massage therapy.

Join massage pioneer Larry Heisler in this all day, hands-on workshop that specifically addresses inter-scapular trigger points. Larry will take you through all the aspects of his dramatically effective approach exploring causes, contributing factors, contraindications and long-term strategies.

This class will help you address your client’s inter-scapular pain,
and the protocol you are going to learn will give you the experience and insight you need!
You will have the clinical tools to address this soft tissue complaint effectively and it will be great for your business!

“Love this class- Larry you made it very interesting and informative. Your relaxed way of teaching makes it easy to learn. Thank you.” Beth Ann, LMT

“I loved the class!” Nalda Pena, LMT

“Enjoyed this class very much! I’m looking forward to implementing these techniques with my clients right away.” Danielle Kastner, LMT

“This is the best classroom experience. I’ve learned so much that I will definitely use with clients. Larry is the absolute best instructor; his enthusiasm makes you want to learn more!” Maria Gamble, LMT

“By far the most informative, interactive class taught by an amazing instructor!” Joseph Merola

Flexibility is an important adjunct to regain or maintain optimal health.  Prevention of postural problems and injuries to joints should be a priority.  Stretching your clients has many benefits.  In addition to adjustments, you will be able to help your clients regain postural control of specific muscles that might be creating chronic musculoskeletal disorders, spasms or strains. Healthier muscles result in increased range of motion, improved circulation, greater postural control and optimal performance.

You will learn about the principles and clinical aspects of flexibility, the factors limiting flexibility, as well as techniques to enhance flexibility throughout the body.

You will learn the most effective stretches to eliminate pain, alleviate muscle soreness, improve balance, and prevent common injuries.

 Shiatsu Power Points and Techniques
(formerly Supercharge Your Swedish Massage with Shiatsu)
with Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT
1 day, 9:30am to 6:00pm, 8 credits, $175.00

Adding Shiatsu to your massage will supercharge your work!

Shiatsu is a deeply powerful and complete form of bodywork, respected worldwide and based on thousands of years of empirical data. What’s more profound is that the meridian system and its specific acu-points have a deep influence on our musculature, the internal organ conditions and the immune and nervous systems. The meridian lines and acu-points are considered extensions of the internal organs so learning the points that enhance their functioning makes all the sense in the world. Join us for this one day workshop, where Larry will teach you how to add the most powerful shiatsu lines and points to supercharge your Swedish massage.

“The first 8,000 massage treatments I performed in my career were Traditional Barefoot Shiatsu sessions. I had studied for years with the Macrobiotic and Japanese Masters Michio Kushi and Sensei Masahiro Oki and was amazed at their breadth of wisdom, power and effectiveness. There wasn’t any type of overhead bar or other props in the early 1970’s and you did not walk on your client’s body. Instead it was a very sophisticated form of bodywork using many parts of your own body to treat your client while concentrating on the energy lines called meridians and specific acupuncture points called tsubos.”
Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

Introduction to Thai Massage for Floor or Table

Thai Massage is an in-demand technique which clients love! It increases flexibility, reduces muscle pain, relieves joint restrictions, softens fascia, and promotes deep relaxation and rest. This class will show you how to include Thai massage in any table or floor session, using passive range of motion and compression. We'll cover basic techniques, philosophy, benefits, and applications, with the client lying prone, side-lying, or supine, working on the feet, legs, abdomen, ribcage, back, and shoulders. You'll leave with a 45min comprehensive Thai massage routine to start practicing right away. Your instructor is one of the most experienced Thai massage instructors in the country. TABLE THAI
with Rose Griscom, RTT, LMT
2 days, 9:30am to 6:00pm, 16 credits, $300.00

Fri & Sat, March 23rd and 24th
Fri & Sat, Nov. 16th and 17th

WHAT TO EXPECT:

A new version of Table Thai: combine Thai massage compressions & stretches with Swedish massage, on a massage table, with the client properly draped, working supine and prone. Thai-Yoga massage is a playful mix of passive yoga stretches, compression-style massage, and loving-kindness meditation, adapted here from the traditional floor mat to a standard massage tablet.
This powerful and ancient practice releases muscle and joint tension, relaxes the mind, reduces physical discomfort, and allows you to use your body effectively while providing deep stretches and relaxing techniques that your clients will LOVE.

This is NOT doing Thai on the table just as if you were on the floor—though you could incorporate it that way if you want to. And it is NOT doing your Swedish massage with Thai massage 'strokes'. This training is a beautiful and practical combination protocol of some Swedish followed by some Thai, then some Swedish followed by some Thai, as we progress around the body. Very useful, effective, and easy to do.

Students are expected to already know some basic Swedish massage, as that is not specifically taught in class. Rather, the Thai massage table techniques are taught and you are shown how to integrate your existing Swedish techniques during the Table Thai session.

·                Offer something new to your clients.

·                Incorporate Thai massage into your table practice.

·                Refresh your Thai training.

·                Adapt Thai to a massage table.

·                Learn an hour routine which treats feet, legs, hips, abdomen, chest, neck,

                  and back.

·                All the basics are covered with lots of hands-on time.

 WHAT TO BRING:

·                We have massage tables at this location.

·                Sheets: table, drape, and face cradle.

·                We will at times work OVER CLOTHING, so please bring or wear loose, comfortable, modest clothing that allows freedom of movement such as lightweight sweat pants, yoga pants, pajama-style pants, t-shirt, cotton shirt, or lightweight sweater, with minimum buttons or zippers.

·                We will also work UNCLOTHED and DRAPED, so be prepared to change.

·                Bring water and a snack for break time, or food is within driving distance for lunch time.

For specialized deep tissue, hot stone bodywork

Hot stone therapy has become one of the most requested spa treatments around the world. In Under the Stone Dr. Henry Roth teaches you how to use his patented, hand-carved Rothstone, made from a variety of stones including black agate, a healing and protective gemstone, and travertine and serpentine, also gemstones, each with their own healing properties.

Unlike any other stone on the market, the Rothstone adapts perfectly with airtight conformity to all of the hard and soft tissue of the human anatomy. In addition, it has better heat retention than basalt stones, so it takes YOU, the hot stone therapist, to the next level by allowing you to perform a great deep-tissue massage with deeper penetration. Most importantly, it will extend your career longevity by avoiding overuse of the thumb, hands, and wrist.

This workshop will prove to be a wonderful addition to your current use of hot stone therapy or as a customized hot stone therapy added to your menu of services.

I attended the Rothstone massage class in the fall of 2016 at North Jersey Massage Training Center with Dr. Henry Roth. As soon as Dr. Roth began demonstrating how to glide the heated stone around the curves of the back and neck, I knew I was going to use this technique in my practice. I have had very positive response from all my clients. The stones are effective in the release of muscular stress in a completely different way than using my fingers, thumbs and elbows. In fact the Rothstone has saved my thumb!

What many people, therapist and clients alike don’t realize is the impact scar tissue can have on their bodies; on the surface, superficial, and/or deep. Other than if infected, health professionals have generally overlooked the physiological and psychological effects scar tissue can have on a person. But now, as massage therapy and manual bodywork is coming more to the forefront in the healthcare world, it is now becoming clear that restrictions in soft tissue like scars can directly affect muscles, fascia, nerve pathways, circulatory pathways, lymph flow and become a catalyst for many chronic conditions.

In this course we will learn what Scar Tissue is and how it is formed; learning both the good side of scar tissue along with the bad side. Looking at the soft tissue dysfunctions we will see where scar tissue falls in line with the healing process and if left untreated how it forms into more of a stubborn soft tissue dysfunction. Participants will learn the physiology of scar tissue, learning the stages of healing. Participants will also learn the different types of scars and their physiological and psychological effect(s) on the person. Then we will learn the different treatments that are used by many therapists to minimize if not totally rid the body of scar tissue. Class will include a demonstration of techniques used by massage therapists: Cross fiber friction, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, Myofascial Release, Active Release Technique, Soft Tissue Release, as well as Stretching and Cupping.

YES, it’s true! Massage therapists in New Jersey have caught up to the rest of the country and the world. Throughout Canada, massage therapists routinely use ultrasound as an additional component to their massage therapy sessions and now we can use a hand-held ultrasound device in our massage therapy session too. Therapeutic ultrasound is a completely safe procedure that uses pulsed sound waves to stimulate soft tissue beneath the surface of the skin to produce therapeutic benefits to injured tissue. I have always taught my students that anything that increases circulation, decreases pain and speeds up healing. That’s why heat, ice and even magnets can be therapeutic. A hand-held ultrasound device is also touted to increase circulation as well as range of motion, soften scar tissue and adhesions, decrease muscle spasms, and increase tissue healing and repair. It is often used for muscle tension and spasms, strains, sprains, tendonitis, arthritic complaints and specific conditions like TMJ, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow and carpel tunnel syndrome. This day long workshop will teach you all the aspects of using an ultrasound device from indications and contraindications to addressing specific soft tissue conditions and complaints a medical massage therapist works on every day.

Please Note: THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO ALL LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPISTS BUT WE ARE NOT OFFERING CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS FOR NCBTMB OR N.Y.S. STUDENTS WHO TAKE THIS PROGRAM.
