ARE YOU CALLING ME FAT?

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

"If you are willing to look at another person's behavior toward you as a reflection of the state of their relationship with themselves rather than a statement about your value as a person, then you will, over a period of time cease to react at all."

  Yogi Bhajan

As a kid growing up in the streets of NYC you had to have a tough skin.  The boys in my neighborhood called each other by their distinguishing characteristics. Amongst the girls or parents I was Larry but amongst the local kids, my friends, I was called the Beak, because my nose looks like a birds beak. Although I think my nose looks more like a can opener, i guess they couldn't call me Hamilton Beach. The local kids had no inhibitions about calling the small wiry kid, Mouse or the heavy set kid, Fat Stuff. Eye glassed kids were Four Eyes and the neighborhood was complete with Dumb Shit and various other insulting names. The amazing thing, amongst these boys no one seemed to get insulted. No one felt violated. No one seemed to take it personal. In fact,we made fun of our idiosyncrasies daily. It wasn't considered cruel or outrageous behavior. If you had a name, as ugly or stupid as it might have seen to outsiders, in our collective it meant you were loved and part of a group that was there for each other, thick or thin.  If you gave it to somebody verbally, you would simply get it back, usually in spades and everyone would laugh their tushes off.
Fortunately we've come along way since then. We think before we talk and we are sensitive to how people will respond to our verbal quips. For some watching their tongue is just a matter of political correctness, for others being sensitive is about kindness and thoughtfulness. I know you might think if you tell me I'm getting fat that I will have a revelation and correct the error of my ways but it doesn't work like that. If I'm really stuck in my melodrama that will just make things worse.
Sai Baba says, "Speak the truth but let it be kind and helpful."  Taking responsibility for your words is about transmitting your energy which after all is a spiritual practice.
So we've come a long way since we were adolescents or maybe I should say I've come a long way since adolescence, and I'm really glad about that. At times it wasn't easy to correct. But here's the thing...when i grew up and sensitized to the power of my words, i realized that the person or part of the person that gets offended or takes things personally was my little stinky lower stuck self, EGO. Who gets upset, my EGO. Who has that inferiority complex, the anger, the insecurity, the jealousy? Who is reacting, being controlled to jump through the hoops of life?
You guessed it, my lower self, dark side, the EGO, EGO, EGO and EGO. It's the lower self that puts me on the continuous pendulum of happy, sad, happy sad, acting like a helpless reactionary.

Every spiritual teacher, every spiritual path states we need too extricate our self and stop identifying with our little, constantly whining, imperfect self.

To act, not react.

In this regard, Sai Baba says,
"In praise and blame, always the same."
So the illusion is identifying with our lower, EGO animal characteristics self. It's our identity with our lower self that keeps us separated from our true identity, our higher God self. Giving in to the lower emotions, allowing those negative emotions to hook us and jerk us around, is tantamount to giving away your power, which essentially can make you weak and open the door to a plethora of health problems.

So for years, I would travel from spiritual teacher to teacher specifically to get my Egoectomy. My spiritual mentor, the great meditation master Hilda Charlton was a surgeon when it came to uncovering the EGO's hiding places. She would teach that anyone that could press your buttons and get under your skin was showing you your inequities, pointing out your weaknesses, the places you can still get stuck spiritually. In essence they are giving you valuable teachings.
Hilda said, "To take offense is as bad as to give offense."
So the next time someone calls you fat and ugly, thank them for sharing and recognize that's their problem. Also remember, if you react to it, it has now become your problem.

REMEMBER: Master your lower self. Hold your center, don't give away your power, don't play victim.

Every experience is an opportunity, a lesson; every person is your teacher, your guide, especially those that press your buttons. Everywhere you're sent, you're being sent for a reason, perhaps to grow and learn, perhaps to serve and uplift, perhaps to teach. Find the teachings in all things, become like a child and see magic and excitement in all things.

A comprehensive "must have" MLD Vodder-style course for all healthcare professionals.

Learn about the lymphatic system in an interactive format. You will explore the history of MLD, its founding fathers and introduction to the United States in the 1980's by Surgeon Robert Lerner, M.D. for cancer patients.

Master practitioner Elisa DiFalco worked for Dr. Lerner and was Clinic Director of his LTS Clinic in Ft. Lauderdale.  She will take you on a tour on of the A&P of the lymphatic system in a fun, interactive format and introduce you to the indications, contraindications, pathology and assessments necessary when working with lymphatic medical conditions.  The tour continues with a hands-on lab teaching you to perform a basic full body MLD sequence you can employ immediately to your existing clients and patients.  Conclude with general guidelines to compression garments and lymphosize exercises from Germany's Clinics of Lymphology for optimum self care of the client and outcome preservation.

This 2-day course has been rated a "10" by the AMTA, FSMTA, leading hospitals and Occupational Therapy Associations.
Find out why MLD has become one of the most requested modalities for pediatrics, sports, plastic surgery, face lifts and 40 + conditions.
The marketplace need for MLD is expanding for those who are trained in the latest and most
requested techniques for medical, sports, & spa.

Manual Lymph Drainage 102:

Hollywood Med-Spa Style MLD (1-day)

with Elisa DiFalco, M.S., O.T., L.M.T

Thurs., September 4
Fri., November 7

10-6PM   8 CE Hours   $175

Manual Lymph Drainage has climbed to the 4th most requested modality in the United States

Manual Lymph Drainage was developed, refined and researched by Dr. Vodder near the turn of the century in Europe. Since then, MLD was made available in European Clinics of Lymphology to treat medical conditions and offered at elite spas for wellness and cosmetic beauty. As America's "Boomers" are opting for these services, they still prefer the most natural modalities to compliment their procedure, and surgeons respond with great respect to the pre and post operative benefits of Manual Lymph Drainage. Whether for general immune system enhancement, natural healthy skin glow, weight reduction or to minimize swelling, bruising and pain, MLD has found its way on the menu of services of Med-Spa's everywhere.
It also does an amazing job reducing scars before they even form.

In this course we will cover the use of MLD in the Spa, Med-Spa industry beginning with an introduction to the foundation and history of the work and its historical spread through the United States. You'll discover lymphatic A&P in a new and exciting way that brings meaning to the words: detoxification, weight loss and more.
Then you will learn a full body MLD that combines the art & science of manual lymph drainage celebrated in the elite spas of Europe.
You'll also enjoy before & after photos taken at surgery sites by your instructor who has worked for several of America's leading surgeons.

Manual Lymph Drainage 103:

Lymphlift of the Head, Neck & Face (1-day)

with Elisa DiFalco, M.S., O.T., L.M.T

Friday, September 5th
Saturday, November 8th

10-6pm 8 CE Hours $175

Manual Lymph Drainage was developed, refined and researched by Dr. Vodder near the turn of the century in Europe. His original work began with the Head, Neck & Face for the sinusitis conditions and was later expanded as a full body protocol. Since then, MLD was made available in European Clinics of Lymphology to treat medical conditions and offered at the elite spas of Europe for anti-aging and wellness. Whether you desire to work in the medical industry or spa and med-spa, Lymphlift of the Head, Neck & Face will be a welcome addition to the menu.

Won't you join us as MLD master practitioner Elisa DiFalcoM.S., O.T., L.M.T,  comprehensively discusses the anatomy and physiology of the lymph system of the face and the benefits of MLD for the treatment of conditions, wellness, anti-aging, as well as for cosmetic procedures and surgeries. The hands on portion of the lab will be exciting as it will give you the 15 minute "add on" protocol when combining MLD into a massage or facial routine as well as the 50 minute Lymphlift which is utilized when treating conditions such as: acne, rosacea, under eye swelling & bruising, cosmetic surgery, sinusitis, headaches, bell's palsy and more.

Lymphlift of the Head, Neck and Face is the second most requested protocol in both the medical and spa setting and serves as a great compliment to the skill of all licensed practitioners in the industry.

"As the massage therapy profession matures and we finally move our education into the four year university system, this will be one of the programs that will be mandatory for you to get your Bachelor of Science degree in massage therapy."

Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Compiled or written by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

Oriental Diagnosis: The Ear Crease and Heart Disease!

One might say that the original holistically oriented lifestyle and

mind-set originated in ancient China. The Chinese were very keen on understanding the laws of nature, the way of things, which they referred to as the Tao. By observing how nature manifested itself, how it conducted its business so to speak, the Chinese people would understand how to appropriately conduct their own day to day actions. For instance, the spring season would bring with it fresh growth, renewal and all things green. So in the courts and culture, to live in accordance with the way of things, the populous would wear spring colors and would attempt to emulate the new season by celebrating the season of renewal. Cutting a tree down for lumber would be discouraged as would the killing of most things growing during the season of rebirth. It would be strongly frowned upon as in inviting misfortune by going against the laws of nature, the Tao. So it's fair to say that the Chinese scholars were paying great attention to how all of nature presented itself. After literally thousands of years of detailed note-taking, the body of information collected about life was so immense that it could be broken up into all of the modern day subject areas. When it came to health issues, the notes were detailed beyond imagination and they contained insights and truths that we are still just beginning to understand and decipher. For instance, if we were to spend all of our time with children, after a couple of thousand years, hundreds of generations of observation, we would no doubt more clearly understand the relationships between lifestyle, geography, diet and childhood conditions, disease or psychology. They call that empirical evidence, understanding by observation and experimentation. Jean Piaget the Swiss developmental psychologist codified the stages of child development in one lifetime and my own children's pediatrician, Dr. Howard Schlacter made it very clear that a major contributor of throat and ear infections was dairy, sugar, and flour products. When asked how he came to that conclusion he said, it was obvious after a lifetime of practicing medicine with children. So now I have set the scientific or empirical stage for understanding Oriental Diagnosis. I call it Oriental Diagnosis because my teachers, all of Asian ancestries, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, called it that. Essentially this form of assessment is about observation of the human form.

So here's the topic for holiday conversation but I must first put in a disclaimer. I'm pretty sure most of your family and guests will not like it and probably cross you off of their future holiday gatherings. But here's the rub, it might save someone's life, maybe even your own. Not surprisingly, I was taught this by my teachers in the early 1970's.

A diagonal crease in your earlobe is one of the early warning risk factors for coronary heart disease.

Dr. Arthur Friedlander, D.M.D., a professor at UCLA published research on the link between the earlobe crease and blocked arteries. He stated that blood vessels concentrate in the earlobe and those with circulatory problems can show up as an ear crease.

Turkish researchers discovered that earlobe creases were common amongst individuals diagnosed with severe arterial back-ups and found those with a visible ear crease were roughly 10 percent more likely to suffer from blocked arteries.

The New England Journal of Medicine in 1973 reported that a diagonal earlobe crease (ELC) was a potential indicator of coronary artery disease (CAD).

There was a study published in 1982 by Pasternac and colleagues. Increasing age and coronary heart disease was associated with the ear crease.

For patients who were displaying symptoms, the earlobe crease suggested a more severe form of heart disease. The researchers wrote, the earlobe crease, "May identify a subset of patients prone to early aging and to the early development of coronary artery disease, whose prognosis might be improved by early preventative measures."

In 1989, Kirkham and colleagues studied cadavers who had died from many different causes and they said, "We found a strong association between earlobe creases and a cardiovascular cause of death in men and women after age, height, and diabetes had been controlled for."

Another study in 1991 by Elliott and colleagues found similar results.

In 2006, an ear crease study by Edston found individuals under the age of 40 had a predictive value as high as 80%.

NYU School of Medicine in 2011 concluded that the ear lobe crease is a predictor of coronary artery disease.

Turning Lemons into Lemonade

My family and friends have always hated when I would look at them in terms of Oriental Diagnosis. I can't say that I blame them either because I can drive myself crazy by just looking in a mirror. BUT...these things are just tools and encouragement to make more intelligent life choices. Let's face it, we are all terminal. But how and when we are going to succumb can be determined, at least partially, by our day to day actions and habits. Simply start by choosing a more plant based diet and get your other healthy habits going. Would it be so hard to stretch and get some cardio, get a massage, take a vitamin, meditate a bit and push the simple carbs out of your life? Don't answer that...JUST DO IT!
