THE 10,000 HOUR RULE!

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

When i was growing up there was only one person that played like Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton, now on every corner, in every major city there are hundreds, if not thousands of kids that routinely play at their level.

The fact is we are getting better at everything we do and I believe we are getting a lot smarter as well. I know sometimes its hard to tell that but as we get healthier by eating a plant based diet, as we meditate regularly, exercise, take vitamins, eat organic, etc., we will begin to transform and eventually see the light.

In 2008, Canadian author and journalist Malcolm Gladwell penned a book called, Outliers: The Story of Success. Gladwell put forth the notion that expertise can be measured by the number of hours an individual gets to practice their specific subject. While i think we can all cite glaring exceptions to any hard and fast rule in this regard, neurologist Daniel Levitin states, "

The emerging picture from such studies is that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert-in anything."
A
ccording to Outliers author Malcolm Gladwell, 10,000 hours of hard practice is roughly equivalent to ten years of study.

He believes ten thousand hours is the magic number for greatness and in his book he presents the science to support his hypothesis. That's quite a commitment. Ten thousand hours of teaching, ten thousand patients, ten thousand exercise classes, ten thousand hours of plumbing, you get the idea. In this day and age when folks have so many options and distractions, 10,000 hours can seem like a daunting task. The advice I give my students is to focus specifically on the areas that deeply inspire and uplift you and the time will just fly by.

This idea is quite common in the Orient. Don't call yourself a Tai Chi instructor until you have the requisite number of hours under your belt, otherwise it's just phony baloney. And remember, 10,000 hours is just to become a consummate professional, not even a master.

So if 10,000 hours makes you a fully qualified professional, it takes 25,000 hours to become a Master and 35,000 or more hours to call yourself a Grandmaster.

When I was studying traditional barefoot shiatsu in the early 1970's, I studied with the great Macrobiotic master, Michio Kushi. One day he took me aside and said "Larry, when you have treated around 20,000 people, folks could just sit in the same room with you and your energy will be so powerful that they will start the healing process."

Now that I have given over 50,000 massage therapy sessions, I'm always on the look-out for miraculous things to happen. While there's no doubt I'm doing the best healing bodywork of my life, the healing and inspiration folks receive are more from my loving support and encouragement than from the symptomatic relief from their aches and pains. Kushi always reminded us that encouraging folks to transform their world spiritually, psychologically and especially nutritionally was much more powerful than simply getting rid of their symptoms. He said symptomatic medicine was the lowest form of healing practiced. So while I can treat your arthritis, your headaches and your lower back pain very effectively with say trigger point therapy, if I can inspire you to change your lifestyle and especially your diet the results will be much more profound, life- changing.

So ten thousand hours for me is entry level and this doesn't mean there aren't extraordinarily gifted people that can almost be exceptional from the get go but it does mean that you should look at an individuals expertise in any subject whatsoever in terms of how long they have immersed themselves in that area, how much study they have undertaken, how much experience they have. Otherwise you are just getting opinions and everyone has opinions.

So the next time someone calls themselves a Master or gives you a definitive opinion about any subject whatsoever, unless they have put in the time, you'll know when they are fibbing even if they believe it themselves.

A comprehensive "must have" MLD Vodder-style course for all healthcare professionals.

Learn about the lymphatic system in an interactive format. You will explore the history of MLD, its founding fathers and introduction to the United States in the 1980's by Surgeon Robert Lerner, M.D. for cancer patients.

Master practitioner Elisa DiFalco worked for Dr. Lerner and was Clinic Director of his LTS Clinic in Ft. Lauderdale.  She will take you on a tour on of the A&P of the lymphatic system in a fun, interactive format and introduce you to the indications, contraindications, pathology and assessments necessary when working with lymphatic medical conditions.  The tour continues with a hands-on lab teaching you to perform a basic full body MLD sequence you can employ immediately to your existing clients and patients.  Conclude with general guidelines to compression garments and lymphosize exercises from Germany's Clinics of Lymphology for optimum self care of the client and outcome preservation.

This 2-day course has been rated a "10" by the AMTA, FSMTA, leading hospitals and Occupational Therapy Associations.
Find out why MLD has become one of the most requested modalities for pediatrics, sports, plastic surgery, face lifts and 40 + conditions.
The marketplace need for MLD is expanding for those who are trained in the latest and most
requested techniques for medical, sports, & spa.

Manual Lymph Drainage 102:

Hollywood Med-Spa Style MLD (1-day)

with Elisa DiFalco, M.S., O.T., L.M.T

Thurs., September 4
Fri., November 7

10-6PM   8 CE Hours   $175

Manual Lymph Drainage has climbed to the 4th most requested modality in the United States

Manual Lymph Drainage was developed, refined and researched by Dr. Vodder near the turn of the century in Europe. Since then, MLD was made available in European Clinics of Lymphology to treat medical conditions and offered at elite spas for wellness and cosmetic beauty. As America's "Boomers" are opting for these services, they still prefer the most natural modalities to compliment their procedure, and surgeons respond with great respect to the pre and post operative benefits of Manual Lymph Drainage. Whether for general immune system enhancement, natural healthy skin glow, weight reduction or to minimize swelling, bruising and pain, MLD has found its way on the menu of services of Med-Spa's everywhere.
It also does an amazing job reducing scars before they even form.

In this course we will cover the use of MLD in the Spa, Med-Spa industry beginning with an introduction to the foundation and history of the work and its historical spread through the United States. You'll discover lymphatic A&P in a new and exciting way that brings meaning to the words: detoxification, weight loss and more.
Then you will learn a full body MLD that combines the art & science of manual lymph drainage celebrated in the elite spas of Europe.
You'll also enjoy before & after photos taken at surgery sites by your instructor who has worked for several of America's leading surgeons.

Manual Lymph Drainage 103:

Lymphlift of the Head, Neck & Face (1-day)

with Elisa DiFalco, M.S., O.T., L.M.T

Friday, September 5th
Saturday, November 8th

10-6pm 8 CE Hours $175

Manual Lymph Drainage was developed, refined and researched by Dr. Vodder near the turn of the century in Europe. His original work began with the Head, Neck & Face for the sinusitis conditions and was later expanded as a full body protocol. Since then, MLD was made available in European Clinics of Lymphology to treat medical conditions and offered at the elite spas of Europe for anti-aging and wellness. Whether you desire to work in the medical industry or spa and med-spa, Lymphlift of the Head, Neck & Face will be a welcome addition to the menu.

Won't you join us as MLD master practitioner Elisa DiFalcoM.S., O.T., L.M.T,  comprehensively discusses the anatomy and physiology of the lymph system of the face and the benefits of MLD for the treatment of conditions, wellness, anti-aging, as well as for cosmetic procedures and surgeries. The hands on portion of the lab will be exciting as it will give you the 15 minute "add on" protocol when combining MLD into a massage or facial routine as well as the 50 minute Lymphlift which is utilized when treating conditions such as: acne, rosacea, under eye swelling & bruising, cosmetic surgery, sinusitis, headaches, bell's palsy and more.

Lymphlift of the Head, Neck and Face is the second most requested protocol in both the medical and spa setting and serves as a great compliment to the skill of all licensed practitioners in the industry.

"As the massage therapy profession matures and we finally move our education into the four year university system, this will be one of the programs that will be mandatory for you to get your Bachelor of Science degree in massage therapy."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Compiled or written by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

SOY PRODUCTS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE CANCER RISKS

In May of 2009 I was reading an article in Men's Health magazine entitled, Is This The Most Dangerous Food for Men?  The picture was of a bowl of soybeans. The article went on to talk about the dark side of soy products. The article literary scared the daylights out of me and promulgated my writing an article in this newsletter announcing to everyone to cut way back on soy products especially if you were a male. I even went so far as to tell my children to cut way back on tofu and for vegetarians that is bigger than you might think. My Japanese Macrobiotic teachers did say that soy products were way too high in protein and should only be consumed moderately and in the fermented state only. While some of my friends think I'm out there, I really try not to make recommendations for my family that are controversial or considered radical. I usually base my decisions on the science and a modicum of common sense. Here's a short quote from the Men's Health article, you'll see what frightened me...

"James Price's breasts had been painful and swollen. It looked as if gum balls were implanted underneath each nipple. The slightest touch triggered throbs. For Price, a retired U.S. Army intelligence officer who once flew attack helicopters in Vietnam, these changes were more than just physically uncomfortable. "Men aren't supposed to have breasts," he says today in a quiet Texas drawl. "It was like my body was feminizing." A lean and wiry man, the breast development stood in stark contrast to the rest of his body. But it was not Price's only symptom. His beard growth had slowed, he'd lost hair from his arms, chest, and legs, and he'd stopped waking up with morning erections.
"My sexual desire disappeared," he says.

I guess you get the idea but for men the article gets even worse. Let's just say it was every mans worse nightmare.

At that time soy researchers were saying that soy products appear to be estrogenic and therefore circumstances like the one above were quite possible. So I put out a clarion call for caution until we knew more, a lot more. As it turns out, soy products do not increase your estrogen the way that was alleged, rather they are estrogen mimickers. The gentleman quoted above was consuming three quarts of soy milk a day and his quote unquote "feminizing" was a food sensitivity reaction from the rather large amount of soy milk he consumed daily. But it took three years before I relaxed my views on the consumption of soy and I still make the macrobiotic recommendation of consuming soy in the fermented state only (tofu, tempeh, miso). It happened when i was one of the keynote speakers at the Macrobiotic conference in 2012. I ran into the famous vegetarian medical guru, Dr. Neal Barnard. In conversation the soy subject came up and he said the research was now crystal clear and in reality soy products were a virtual fountain of youth. His words were so reassuring and his research is impeccable. Here's some of the latest findings about soy quoted from Dr. Barnard's great organization, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

"Epidemiological studies have found that soy protein may

reduce the risk for cancers including breast, colon, and prostate."

"Studies show that women who include soy products in their

routine are less likely to develop breast cancer, compared with

other women. In January 2008, researchers at the University

of Southern California found that women averaging one cup

of soymilk or about one-half cup of tofu daily have about 30

percent less risk of developing breast cancer, compared with

women who have little or no soy products in their diets."

"The Women's Healthy Eating and Living Study

showed that women previously diagnosed with breast cancer

gain a major advantage by incorporating soy products into their

diets. Those who consumed the most soy products cut their risk

of cancer recurrence or mortality in half. Similarly, a study in the

Journal of the American Medical Association reported results

based on 5,042 women previously diagnosed with breast cancer

who were participating in the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival

Study over a four-year period. The study showed that women

who regularly consumed soy products, such as soymilk, tofu,

or edamame, had a 32 percent lower risk of recurrence and

a 29 percent decreased risk of death, compared with women

who consumed little or no soy."

"The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that increased intake of soy resulted in a 26 percent reduction in prostate cancer risk."

There are many more studies cited in the PCRM article, so I am including the link for it below. Bottom line is that soy can make a significantly positive contribution to your daily health.

I was recently having a conversation with my brother about the toxic effects of the flu vaccine. I had heard that individuals that take the shot in consecutive years run the risk of being subjected to high amounts of mercury and aluminum found in the immunization. The conversation then went down the senile dementia and aluminum conversation. Well it turns out that from all over the world studies are pouring in showing serious side effects and dangers. I know you don't want to be bummed out by this but you need to at least be aware. Pull up this site and take a look, it's worth a look.
