How to read this newsletter:

Every two weeks I put out a newsletter and each newsletter contains three poignant sections.

The first section,

opening the newsletter is my keynote article filled with powerful spiritual insights based on my lifetime of spiritual study, practice and teaching.

The second section,

in the middle of the newsletter, is devoted to our Accredited Continuing Education Programs, our healing facilities and what's new and happening in and around our New Jersey Massage.

The third section

is devoted to health, wellness and environmental issues.

I sincerely hope you get inspired by what you read and I ask you to share this newsletter with your friends and family. If you have read or come across something that is exciting and newsworthy, please forward it to me and perhaps we can include it our newsletter. Much Love to you and yours...

A great lesson! One of the New Commandments
by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

"And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also."

Mathew 5:40, King James Version

The great N.Y.C. meditation Master Hilda Charlton never charged for her classes. She was economically poor and with the hundreds and thousands of folks she sincerely touched with her extraordinary teachings she could have made a substantial living. I always thought she was rich in the real sense, her unquenchable desire for liberation along with her pure Goddess goodness, she was a breath-taking human being. Hilda sincerely believed that spiritual teachings should flow freely and unconditionally to all. That's one of the hallmarks that made her so great and memorable. She would give her spiritual pearls of wisdom and precious time away freely and unconditionally to any and all seeking insight, support and sustenance. She was like a river.
In essence her life was saying, imagine if Jesus charged for his teachings or charged an admission before he would administer his Sermon on the Mount, where would the average bloke like us be then?

Knowing of my proclivity to teach, Hilda once took me aside to ask if I would be charging for the meditation classes I taught. I said, "no Hilda," which seemed to please her profoundly. She patted me on my cheek affectionately and with the words "good" coming from her lips she pounded me on my chest. I immediately got a contact high from her exuberance which of course in yoga tradition is called "Shaktipat!" A spiritual transmission of the teacher's power (blessing) to, in this case, her chela (student) me. With that came an explanation that our lineage would not charge for something that is a God-given right and as an emissary of her teachings and especially to be privy to the storehouse of her power it had to be that way.

Generosity comes from an open heart and improves the lives of us all profoundly. And let's be crystal clear about this, generosity on our part ultimately benefits us the most. I want everyone around me to be as smart, as healthy, as creative and as enlightened as humanly possible and if I could do things to make that happen faster, amen to that.

Besides I believe it greases the palm of the karmic Gods thereby lessening whatever one comeuppance might be scheduled to come our way in the future. Karma, it can be challenging.

Philanthropists are revered for their unconditional generosity. There acts of selflessness and sacrifice for the common good of all is considered Christ-like. We honor them; construct edifices and foundations in their name.

Others however, have the expectation that when giving a gift; of time, wisdom or money, there should be something coming back in return, an exchange, a give and take. It might just be getting good grades, or a haircut that's required to receive this gift, but it's still dolled out with conditions. That's partially love and partially a barter arrangement. If your generosity comes with conditions, that's obviously not unconditional love. It's more like a form of emotional capitalism. I'll show you love and attention if you _______ (fill in the expectation).

Whenever you withhold love to gain control over someone or your love vanishes when someone fails to meet your expectations that is not real love. Real love is beyond conditions, can not be compromised by a mistake or a test score and it's not about you being disappointed with someone's performance. Now you might say, "But Larry, that's the system we've created down here to encourage our children to work hard for their just rewards in life. Anything else would make our children spoiled and leave them with the thought that they have it coming to them like an inappropriate sense of entitlement. And speaking of entitlement we have a whole generation of blah...blah...blah...I understand that thinking also.

So may I suggest when it comes to love, we give that freely and unconditionally

at all times. When it comes to homework assignments or not punching your sister in the arm, we educate and teach a systemof values and respect that separates the individual from their behavior. Let's repeat that, separates the individual from their behavior. I might be disappointed in a particular behavior you exhibited but that has nothing to do with the fact that I love and respect you.

As teachers, mentors and parents we also have to respect that everyone grows and evolves at different paces, so truly patience can be a virtue. It also requires a teacher that really has the skill to teach or parents that have the patience to parent. When I was an assistant principal in a special needs school system I repeatedly told my staff that "If the student didn't learn, the teacher didn't teach!"

The rule is...

Conditional love damages self confidence and self esteem.

Whenever you're in the presence of an aggressively domineering person, you are very often witnessing the effect of low self esteem and the negative words and messages they received growing up. You might remember these are the comparisons that your parents or teachers spoke of when they compared you to someone else that exhibited the perfect behavior. With the ever famous words, "Can't you be more like Joey."
In essence what you hear is that you are not good enough.

When people in my world make a mistake, or inconvenience me, my first response is not to get angry or disappointed; it is to be supportive and loving. Unconditional love doesn't go away when things get difficult and unconditional love can really make people whole, connected and happy. When you feel loved, genuinely loved for who and what you are, you will feel strong, connected and understood and that will make for a much healthier, happier life.

Michio Kushi, in his thoughtfully spoken broken English, once told me,

"Larry........, give it all away (as he pointed to my heart),

the more you give away, the richer you'll become".

Generosity is about giving from your heart unconditionally.

Here's another take on why this Thou Shalt Be Generous Commandment is important. One of the Native American teachings is to be invisible, to walk humbly, quietly, anonymously through the world, and yet to change and influence it profoundly for the better. There are so many great people that have done this, but you'd never know who they are because they are the invisible architects of our human evolution.

Hilda used to say that if you get the credit for something down here you won't get credit for it upstairs.

But... if you do it without ego, without need for credit, just because it's right, that greatness will be yours forever and no one can take that away from you.

Here's the rub though, you better get with it quick because times are ticking fast and you know what the Old Testament says about this,

"I come like a thief in the night, you know not when."

So be generous with your compliments, be generous with your love, with your wisdom, compassion, your listening ear, your helping hand, with your prayers and intentions, definitely with your patience and of course with tangible, material items as well.

Be generous and let it flow through you like Ram Dass` guru,

Neem Karoli Baba Maharaj says,

"Feed people."

We have already established that service is half of our life Prime Directive. If what you reap is what you sow and every action has an equal and opposite reaction, when you give from your heart, you are affirming your own self preservation.

Remember, "What you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me."

         Thus, the secret of love is to give love. The secret of friendship is to be a friend. And here's another little secret;

the secret of healing is to do healing work, to be a healer.

"As you love, you are doubly blessed, for it flows through you first and then touches the beloved." Hilda

My friend Meir owns a vitamin manufacturing company in Florida called Hollywood Health Products. A wonderful company that I have been purchasing vitamins to sell from our office for 30 years. Meir has devoted his entire life to health concerns and recently he sent this below to every retailer that does business with his company. The  nuclear disaster in Japan has made information like this an absolute lifesaver. Save it some where so its available if you ever need to know it.

We have been getting many calls about iodine from various clinics, as far apart as Florida and Hawaii, because of concerned patients. We hope that the information below will help you answer many questions with greater confidence.

For the past week we have been running very low on some iodine products and with others the supply has run dry for the entire week. The good news is that additional supplies are on the way to us.

Let's separate the hype from the facts

With the growing public interest in iodine, it is an excellent time to introduce the need for iodine for various emergency uses and for all of its many benefits. This may also be a good time to remind your patients that Full Spectrum 44 and Synthergen (our multi-Vitamin-Mineral Products) have about 4 times the amount of iodine that is provided by most "good multis" out there.

We have been trying to reassure individuals and healthcare professionals who have been calling that there is no radiation danger in the US. The atom bombs that were dropped on Japan during W.W.II produced some 10,000 times the amount of radiation and that did not affect the US in a meaningful way. The Chernobyl disaster in Russia was much worse than that of the nuclear power plants in Japan, in terms of the amount of radiation that erupted into the air, and that too did not produce a serious health hazard to distant European nations.

The influence of radioactive iodine on the thyroid is perhaps the main concern for individuals who are at distant locations, only within several days after the burst of nuclear radiations. This is providing the nuclear leak has ejected the radioactive material high enough into the atmosphere to be carried away by the winds (as in a nuclear blast). While most of the radioactive material looses its "hot" nature (radioactivity) within hours or a couple of days after it is dispersed, radioactive iodine stays "hot" and mean for several days - long enough for it to travel by air, perhaps even hundreds of miles high in the atmosphere. On the other hand, radioactive strontium and caesium retain their "hot temper" for months and even years. Let's start with radioactive iodine, since this is the immediate distant threat after a nuclear blast and the major cause for thyroid cancer in the years following radioactive exposure (this was documented by the US government after the era of nuclear testing in Nevada and by European nations in the years following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster).

Supplemental potassium iodide is very protective of the thyroid when taken internally just prior to, or shortly after, exposure to nuclear fallout. Children and infants are more vulnerable than adults. See CDC protocol below (under Additional Resources).

A good way to illustrate the issue to your patients:

The hungrier the thyroid is for iodine, the more likely it is to absorb any trace amount of radioactive iodine that would travel by air.

The body concentrates iodine in the thyroid gland (as part of the biological design of this endocrine gland) in order to insure plenty of iodine supply needed to produce the thyroid hormone, thyroxin. The thyroid is like a sponge for iodine. This explains why a person with even a slight deficiency will absorb any radioactive iodine that would come along (breathed in). Other tissues in the body, like breasts, ovaries and some lymph glands also concentrate iodine for various metabolic functions, this information is relatively recent and has not been brought to the attention of the public, other than by special publications and lectures by endocrinologist Guy Abraham, M.D., David Brownstein, M.D., David Derry, M.D., Ph.D. and others (see references below).

The Japanese are already better protected than most of us because of their high intake of iodine from sea veggies. They get about one hundred times the amount of iodine that we get in our diet.

Now, with this knowledge at our disposal, the time to get familiar with iodine and its protective emergency uses is not when one must have it to save lives... by that time most suppliers may be out of it. The government usually provides it to individuals who are in the immediate high danger zone, if they have their act together. The recommended dose is 130mg. per day per adult - only during the exposure period.

We would recommend that you teach your concerned patients to get the iodine now and not only for emergencies, but for a good detox and maintenance program (detox from harmful halogens like fluoride, bromide and chloride, as well as heavy metals), for endocrine support, and much more.

Other Emergency Uses of Iodine

Iodine can be used to help clean up water and make it

safe to drink

10-15 drops of saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI) in a glass of water may save your life, if you are not sure that you can trust the water. Let it stand for about 3-5 minutes before drinking. When public utility services fail and you must drink water from questionable sources (or while travelling to other countries) a bottle of SSKI is a life saver. This dose of iodine will kill most microbes in the water and make it safe to drink.

Anyone who has never used this much iodine should try one drop first in a small amount of water for 2-3 days to insure tolerance level before attempting a heavy dose. Iodine may act as a cleanser and produce some detox reactions. Our safety information sheet (attached) explains the possible reactions and how to handle it. As you can see, the time to learn to use iodine is not at the last minute when emergency strikes. Iodine is one of our best nutritional "friends," - get to know it at your convenience.

Iodine can help with infections when used as a natural antimicrobial agent

There are many emergency situations when a physician is not available to diagnose an infection and prescription antibiotics are not available. Here again, iodine comes to the rescue. As recommended by Jonathan V. Wright, M.D., 10-15 drops of SSKI (see our Iodide Solution) in water every four hours while awake for 3 days should get the job done, or at least give you the help needed until you can get to a medical facility. See attached information sheet called, Hidden Infections. It bears repeating - no one should attempt such high dosing with iodine before establishing tolerance level with a few drops per day, starting with one drop first as described above.

Our website provides additional educational material on iodine at

Our article, Explore the Power of Iodine Part II, explains some of the emergency uses of iodine as well as the rational and a study that helped determine the level of high doses of iodine to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine. This article is posted on our website. You will also find general patient information on our website regarding safety and benefits from iodine. (available to healthcare professionals - clients of HHP). Patients may access the safety information and some basic general information in the area of our website that does not require a password.

What should we do in a high risk - high radiation area?

Our Iodo-Lite 25 offers 120 capsules of 25mg. In the event of radiation danger in one's area a person should take 3 capsules twice daily (or at least 5 capsules daily for adults with body weight of approx. 100 Lbs. or higher). To be used only while the radiation count in a particular area is elevated. This is a high dose and should not be maintained for longer than necessary. For general maintenance your patients may use one 25mg. capsule every other day. This double use (metabolic maintenance & emergency) makes this product handier than the lower dose option of Iodo-Lite 12.5mg. (see attached Iodine Buffet)

Iodide Solution (SSKI) is the most concentrated (saturated) liquid solution - it is most suitable for various internal and external applications - it is also the most cost effective. Unfortunately we are out of it for now and may have a limited supply in the near future because of the tremendous increased demand. Keep it mind for the future. To get an idea of the various applications of iodine in clinical nutrition, applications that were evaluated by holistic physicians, ask for our information sheet called The Wonders of Iodine (for healthcare professionals).

We often get the question, what about an appropriate (non-emergency) dose for children?

In general, cut the dose by half for half the body weight. Children with 60 Lbs. body weight or higher may use the 12.5mg. capsule for maintenance (I would start them with one capsule every other day).  For smaller children we can either dilute the Iodide Solution by putting 2-3 drops in a spring water bottle (16 oz.) and give them one ounce daily, or use the lotion topically.

Keep in mind that our Iodo-Vite Lotion provides 6mg. of iodine per 2 pumps. We have not studied it to determine how much iodine is absorbed through the skin, but earlier studies show that iodine is absorbed through the skin. See CDC recommendations below. Information about the urine iodine loading test is available by request.

We have had more favorable beneficial reports from the iodine line of products than from any product we have ever introduced. Now is a good time to emphasize it to your patients and see the results for yourself.

Dr. Jonathan Wright has done all of us a great service with his article of 2002 when he listed the many clinical applications of iodine. Abraham, Brownstein and Derry followed later with their own impressive work. Let's put all of this good information to work for the benefit of our patients.

The best lesson from this emergency situation in Japan is for us to learn how to prepare for future emergencies, closer to home. A "dirty bomb" from terrorist attach is a much more likely scenario in the US than a nuclear reactor emergency. You may help your patients by encouraging them to select one family member, or one in a family group (a group of relatives) to assimilate this information, experiment with iodine and be better prepared on behalf of the entire family. As you can see in the above information this can be overwhelming when we try to assimilate it during an emergency. The first reference below will show you that hundreds of thousands of people may die needlessly after a nuclear blast, simply because of lack of information and preparation. Take action now, while the level of interest is high. Get the e-mail addresses of your patients (first responders of the family group) so that you may pass along additional information as we keep you updated.

Check the attachments for information on: Safety information,

iodine for infections, illustration of iodine concentration in tissues other than the thyroid (such as breasts and ovaries) and an updated iodine product list.

CDC Information on how to use Iodine from Potassium Iodide

for protection in the event of a nuclear radiation threat (this is an excerpt - see their website for additional information).

"What is Potassium Iodide (KI)?

"Potassium iodide (also called KI) is a salt of stable (not radioactive) iodine. Stable iodine is an important chemical needed by the body to make thyroid hormones. Most of the stable iodine in our bodies comes from the food we eat. KI is stable iodine in a medicine form. This fact sheet from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives you some basic information about KI. It explains what you should think about before you or a family member takes KI.

"What does KI do?

"Following a radiological or nuclear event, radioactive iodine may be released into the air and then breathed into the lungs. Radioactive iodine may also contaminate the local food supply and get into the body through food or through drink. When radioactive materials get into the body through breathing, eating, or drinking, we say that "internal contamination" has occurred. In the case of internal contamination with radioactive iodine, the thyroid gland quickly absorbs this chemical. Radioactive iodine absorbed by the thyroid can then injure the gland. Because non-radioactive KI acts to block radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland, it can help protect this gland from injury.

"What KI cannot do

"Knowing what KI cannot do is also important. KI cannot prevent radioactive iodine from entering the body. KI can protect only the thyroid from radioactive iodine, not other parts of the body. KI cannot reverse the health effects caused by radioactive iodine once damage to the thyroid has occurred. KI cannot protect the body from radioactive elements other than radioactive iodine-if radioactive iodine is not present, taking KI is not protective. "

one 130 mg tablet, or two 65 mg tablets, or 2 ml of iodine solution (topically).

Breastfeeding women: one 130 mg tablet.

Children 3 to 18 years old: one 65 mg tablet or 1 ml. of solution (topically).

Children who are adult size (150 pounds or more): one 130 mg tablet, despite age.

Infants and children between 1 month and 3 years old: 32 mg (½ of a 65 mg tablet, or ½ ml. of solution). The dose is recommended for nursing and non-nursing infants
and children.

Newborns from birth to 1 month of age: 16 mg (¼ of a 65 mg tablet or ¼ ml. of solution).
The dose is recommended for both nursing and non-nursing newborn infants.

A Message From a Dear Friend Elizabeth Hepburn:

Gratitude has been the cornerstone of my life for many years and was the title of my first cassette recording. I had come through an arduous physical ordeal, and wanted to thank everyone who had helped me in my recovery. Singing for them seemed like a good idea, so with Richard Shulman, at keyboards (also creating arrangements) and Ron Young on guitar, accompanying his own original pieces, "Children of Light" and "Prince of Peace", we recorded some songs, I was currently singing a lot, in a little studio in Soho in 1985. Another lifetime ago!

We gave it to lots of people and ultimately it ended up on The New Age Market. Recently it occurred to many that we should make "Gratitude" available for download at CDBaby.

I'm thrilled to say that that has happened and I invite you to come and listen and download "Gratitude" - . Hope you enjoy!

Happy Spring and Summer - Elizabeth
