FOOD FOR THOUGHT

My friend Meir owns a
vitamin manufacturing company in Florida called Hollywood Health
Products. A wonderful company that I have been purchasing vitamins to
sell from our office for 30 years. Meir has devoted his entire life
to health concerns and recently he sent this below to every retailer
that does business with his company. The nuclear disaster in
Japan has made information like this an absolute lifesaver. Save
it some where so its available if you ever need to know it.
FOR REDUCING RADIATION DAMAGE
We have been
getting many calls about iodine from various clinics, as far apart as
Florida and Hawaii, because of concerned patients. We hope that the
information below will help you answer many questions with greater
For the past
week we have been running very low on some iodine products and with
others the supply has run dry for the entire week. The good news
is that additional supplies are on the way to us.
Let's separate the hype from the facts
growing public interest in iodine, it is an excellent time to
introduce the need for iodine for various
emergency uses and for all of its many benefits. This may also
be a good time to remind your patients that Full Spectrum 44 and
Synthergen (our multi-Vitamin-Mineral Products) have about 4 times
the amount of iodine that is provided by most "good multis"
We have been
trying to reassure individuals and healthcare professionals who
have been calling that there is no radiation danger in the US. The atom bombs that were dropped on Japan
during W.W.II produced some 10,000 times the amount of radiation and
that did not affect the US in a meaningful way. The Chernobyl
disaster in Russia was much worse than that of the nuclear power
plants in Japan, in terms of the amount of radiation that erupted
into the air, and that too did not produce a serious health
hazard to distant European nations.
of radioactive iodine on the thyroid is perhaps the main concern for
individuals who are at distant locations, only within several days
after the burst of nuclear radiations. This is providing the nuclear
leak has ejected the radioactive material high enough into the
atmosphere to be carried away by the winds (as in a nuclear blast). While most of the radioactive material looses
its "hot" nature (radioactivity) within hours or a couple
of days after it is dispersed, radioactive iodine stays
"hot" and mean for several days - long enough for it
to travel by air, perhaps even hundreds of miles high in the
atmosphere. On the other hand, radioactive strontium and caesium
retain their "hot temper" for months and even years. Let's
start with radioactive iodine, since this is the immediate distant
threat after a nuclear blast and the major cause for thyroid cancer
in the years following radioactive exposure (this was documented by
the US government after the era of nuclear testing in Nevada and by
European nations in the years following the Chernobyl nuclear
Supplemental potassium iodide is very protective of the
thyroid when taken internally just prior to, or shortly after,
exposure to nuclear fallout. Children and infants are more vulnerable than adults.
See CDC protocol below (under Additional Resources).
A good way to
illustrate the issue to your patients:
the thyroid is for iodine, the more likely it is to absorb any trace
amount of radioactive iodine that would travel by air.
concentrates iodine in the thyroid gland (as part of the biological
design of this endocrine gland) in order to insure plenty of iodine
supply needed to produce the thyroid hormone, thyroxin. The thyroid is like a sponge for iodine.
This explains why a person with even a slight deficiency will absorb
any radioactive iodine that would come along (breathed in). Other
tissues in the body, like breasts, ovaries and some lymph glands also
concentrate iodine for various metabolic functions, this information
is relatively recent and has not been brought to the attention of the
public, other than by special publications and lectures by
endocrinologist Guy Abraham, M.D., David Brownstein, M.D., David
Derry, M.D., Ph.D. and others (see references below).
are already better protected than most of us because of their high
intake of iodine from sea veggies. They get about one hundred times
the amount of iodine that we get in our diet.
Now, with this
knowledge at our disposal, the time to get familiar with iodine and
its protective emergency uses is not when one must have it
to save lives... by that time most suppliers may be out of it. The
government usually provides it to individuals who are in the
immediate high danger zone, if they have their act together. The
recommended dose is 130mg. per day per adult - only during the
recommend that you teach your concerned patients to get the iodine
now and not only for emergencies, but for a good detox and
maintenance program (detox from harmful halogens like fluoride,
bromide and chloride, as well as heavy metals), for endocrine
support, and much more.
Other Emergency Uses of Iodine
Iodine can be used to help clean up water and make it
safe to drink
10-15 drops of
saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI) in a glass of water may
save your life, if you are not sure that you can trust the water. Let
it stand for about 3-5 minutes before drinking. When public utility
services fail and you must drink water from questionable sources (or
while travelling to other countries) a bottle of SSKI is a life
saver. This dose of iodine will kill most microbes in the water and
make it safe to drink.
Anyone who has
never used this much iodine should try one drop first in a small
amount of water for 2-3 days to insure tolerance level before
attempting a heavy dose. Iodine may act as a cleanser and produce
some detox reactions. Our safety
information sheet (attached) explains the possible
reactions and how to handle it. As you can see, the time to learn to
use iodine is not at the last minute when emergency strikes. Iodine
is one of our best nutritional "friends," - get to know it
at your convenience.
Iodine can help with infections when used as a natural
There are many
emergency situations when a physician is not available to diagnose an
infection and prescription antibiotics are not available. Here again,
iodine comes to the rescue. As recommended by Jonathan V. Wright,
M.D., 10-15 drops of SSKI (see our Iodide Solution) in water every
four hours while awake for 3 days should get the job done, or at
least give you the help needed until you can get to a medical
facility. See attached information sheet called, Hidden Infections.
It bears repeating - no one should attempt such high dosing with
iodine before establishing tolerance level with a few drops per day,
starting with one drop first as described

Our article, Explore the Power of Iodine Part II,
explains some of the emergency uses of iodine as well as the rational
and a study that helped determine the level of high doses of iodine
to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine. This article is
posted on our website. You will also find general patient information
on our website regarding safety and benefits from iodine. www.hhpdr.net (available to
healthcare professionals - clients of HHP). Patients may access
the safety information and some basic general information in

What should we do in a high risk - high radiation area?
Iodo-Lite 25 offers 120 capsules of 25mg. In the event of
radiation danger in one's area a person should take 3 capsules twice
daily (or at least 5 capsules daily for adults with body weight of
approx. 100 Lbs. or higher). To be used only while the radiation count in a
particular area is elevated. This is a high dose and should not be
maintained for longer than necessary. For general maintenance your
patients may use one 25mg. capsule every other day. This double use
(metabolic maintenance & emergency) makes this product handier
than the lower dose option of Iodo-Lite 12.5mg. (see attached Iodine
Iodide Solution (SSKI) is the
most concentrated (saturated) liquid solution - it is most suitable
for various internal and external applications - it is also the most
cost effective. Unfortunately we are out of it for now and may have a
limited supply in the near future because of the tremendous increased
demand. Keep it mind for the future. To get an idea of the various
applications of iodine in clinical nutrition, applications that
were evaluated by holistic physicians, ask for our information sheet

often get the question, what about an appropriate (non-emergency)
dose for children?
In general, cut
the dose by half for half the body weight. Children with 60 Lbs. body
weight or higher may use the 12.5mg. capsule for maintenance (I would
start them with one capsule every other day). For smaller
children we can either dilute the Iodide Solution by
putting 2-3 drops in a spring water bottle (16 oz.) and give
them one ounce daily, or use the lotion topically.
Keep in mind
that our Iodo-Vite Lotion provides 6mg. of iodine per 2 pumps.
We have not studied it to determine how much iodine is absorbed
through the skin, but earlier studies show that iodine is absorbed
through the skin. See CDC recommendations below. Information about
the urine iodine loading test is available by request.
have had more favorable beneficial reports from the iodine line of
products than from any product we have ever introduced. Now is a
good time to emphasize it to your patients and see the
results for yourself.
Wright has done all of us a great service with his article of
2002 when he listed the many clinical applications of iodine.
Abraham, Brownstein and Derry followed later with their own
impressive work. Let's put all of this good information to work
for the benefit of our patients.
The best lesson
from this emergency situation in Japan is for us to learn how to
prepare for future emergencies, closer to home. A "dirty
bomb" from terrorist attach is a much more likely scenario in
the US than a nuclear reactor emergency. You may help your patients
by encouraging them to select one
family member, or one in a family group (a group of
relatives) to assimilate this
information, experiment with iodine and be better prepared on behalf
of the entire family. As you can see in the above information
this can be overwhelming when we try to assimilate it during an
emergency. The first reference below will show you that hundreds of thousands of people may die
needlessly after a nuclear blast, simply because of lack of
information and preparation. Take
action now, while the level of interest is high. Get the
e-mail addresses of your patients (first responders of the family
group) so that you may pass along additional information as we keep
attachments for information on: Safety information,
iodine for infections, illustration
of iodine concentration in tissues other than the thyroid (such as
breasts and ovaries) and an updated iodine product list.
Information on how to use Iodine from Potassium Iodide
in the event of a nuclear radiation threat (this
is an excerpt - see their website for additional information).
Potassium Iodide (KI)?
"Potassium iodide (also called
KI) is a salt of stable (not radioactive) iodine. Stable iodine is an
important chemical needed by the body to make thyroid hormones. Most
of the stable iodine in our bodies comes from the food we eat. KI is
stable iodine in a medicine form. This fact sheet from the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives you some basic
information about KI. It explains what you should think about before
you or a family member takes KI.
does KI do?
"Following a radiological or
nuclear event, radioactive iodine may be released into the air and
then breathed into the lungs. Radioactive iodine may also contaminate
the local food supply and get into the body through food or through
drink. When radioactive materials get into the body through
breathing, eating, or drinking, we say that "internal contamination" has occurred. In the case of
internal contamination with radioactive iodine, the thyroid gland
quickly absorbs this chemical. Radioactive iodine absorbed by the
thyroid can then injure the gland. Because non-radioactive KI acts to
block radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland, it
can help protect this gland from injury.
"Knowing what KI cannot do is
also important. KI cannot prevent radioactive iodine from entering
the body. KI can protect only the thyroid from radioactive iodine,
not other parts of the body. KI cannot reverse the health effects
caused by radioactive iodine once damage to the thyroid has occurred.
KI cannot protect the body from radioactive elements other than
radioactive iodine-if radioactive iodine is not present, taking KI is
not protective. "

Message From a Dear Friend Elizabeth Hepburn:
Gratitude has been the cornerstone of my life for many years
and was the title of my first cassette recording. I had come through
an arduous physical ordeal, and wanted to thank everyone who had
helped me in my recovery. Singing for them seemed like a good idea,
so with Richard Shulman, at keyboards (also creating arrangements)
and Ron Young on guitar, accompanying his own original pieces,
"Children of Light" and "Prince of Peace", we
recorded some songs, I was currently singing a lot, in a little
studio in Soho in 1985. Another lifetime ago!
We gave it to lots of people and ultimately it ended up on The New
Age Market. Recently it occurred to many that we should make
"Gratitude" available for download at CDBaby.
I'm thrilled to say that that has happened and I invite you to
come and listen and download "Gratitude" -
