How to read this newsletter:

Every two weeks I put out a newsletter and each newsletter contains three poignant sections.

The first section,

opening the newsletter is my keynote article filled with powerful spiritual insights based on my lifetime of spiritual study, practice and teaching.

The second section,

in the middle of the newsletter, is devoted to our Accredited Continuing Education Programs, our healing facilities and what's new and happening in and around New Jersey Massage.

The third section

is devoted to health, wellness and environmental issues.

I sincerely hope you get inspired by what you read and I ask you to share this newsletter with your friends and family. If you have read or come across something that is exciting and newsworthy, please forward it to me and perhaps we can include it our newsletter. Much Love to you and yours...

How to Unstick Yourself for Spring

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

There's a great cartoon of a man standing behind bars that are only in front of him. He looks forlorn, desperate, hoping, perhaps even praying to win his freedom by some special grace very often a sanction that he didn't earn. However grace is always there and anytime he chooses he can get out from behind the bars, he would just have to think differently, outside of the box he put himself in.

These are extraordinary times, even desperate times if you're thinking clearly. The clock is ticking on your life, moving closer and closer to that day. Are you satisfied with what you have done, what you have left, who you have touched or like most of us are you an underachiever? While you're trying to lose weight or learn how to use your IPhone, the most important part of your life is dwindling away.

Let's start with a couple of core values.

After sitting in front of many guru's, sensei's, sifu's, shamans, medicine men and women, tzaddiks, mentors, professors, scholars, and an assortment of intellectual giants over the course of my life and in particular, after living the experience of teaching over 3,500 meditation classes and performing over 50,000 massages since 1975,

I have recognized some principles that might be helpful.

First and foremost...

The Prime Directive on this planet,

THE PURPOSE OF LIFE

IS...

TO GROW

(Evolve yourself)

 in every way possible

and then to

SERVE, UPLIFT, AND INSPIRE

ONE ANOTHER

Simply said,

The Prime Directive on this planet,

The reason you are alive is

To Grow and to Serve!

The two main questions you will be asked when you arrive on the other side are:

What did you learn?

and

Who did you help?

I'm not kidding.

I have heard those two questions by dozens of folks that have had profound near death experiences.

Now if you don't believe in the other side or even a spiritual path and purpose, it makes absolutely no difference! Fact is some of the most spiritual people on this planet are total atheists. People who work on improving themselves incessantly, those that strive for a personal excellence physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually and then in turn use their new found awareness, health and generosity to positively affect and touch the lives of others are happier and way more content as they come to the end of their lives. I've personally had the privilege of helping dozens of people to pass over, and in every case, those that had the greatest peace of mind just before crossing over, were the ones that devoted their life to growth and service.

Number Two...

Thou shalt LOVE with all thy heart and all thy soul...

As Elton's song says,

"Love is the opening door. Love is what we came here for."

.

My beloved teacher of meditation Hilda Charlton believed that the easiest path to liberation was by following the path of the heart (bhakti).  To her LOVE was the most powerful force in the universe and that love was the answer to the question how.  She would bang at us, her students, persistently, "Open your heart, if you want to come into your power, you must open your heart."  In spiritual practice we often hear those words but what do they really mean and how do you go about doing it? Now you yoga buffs know that the fourth chakra in the chest is the yogic heart chakra.  It is described as an energy vortex that's the receptacle of compassion, service and unconditional love.  When a yogi or any spiritual adept raises their conscious awareness to the fourth chakra, they have evolved beyond their little ego self and have arrived in the domain of the sacred.  In the 1960's Dr. Richard Alpert, a.k.a. Ram Dass inspired so many of us on our spiritual journeys with his best selling spiritual cookbook, Be Here Now.  In regard to the spiritual leap of consciousness from the lower, self absorbed ego centered chakra's to the fourth, Ram Dass wrote, "If you had crossed the first great barrier (between the third and fourth charkas) so completely that all your energy was localized in the fourth chakra, then you would experience only the compassionate feelings of the brotherhood of the Spirit with all other beings. Whether in a sexual embrace or in a business or social contact, the only feeling towards the other person would be of "us-ness.  Since you would no longer have any investment in yourself as a lower separate ego entity, all of your actions would be in perfect harmony with all the forces acting in the field at that moment.
You would be living in the Tao."

So we know when your heart is open it's not about you anymore.

You feel connected to the spirit, a love and kinship with all living things.

And when you consciously take a deep heartfelt breathe a smile comes to your lips and your eyes blaze with an inner fire.

Your life becomes about service, about unconditional love.

You no longer see yourself as a victim, only a vehicle for teaching, for healing, for uplifting and serving those you come into contact with.

You are about your Father's work;

it's no longer a personal issue or about your personal success.

It's your ego, your smaller self that takes things personally.

Your higher self can never play the game of being a victim.

In a Sunday sermon, Dr. Martin Luther King repeated the biblical reference, "He that would be first among you shall be your servant," and continued by saying,

"The thing I like about it..., by giving that definition of greatness...it means, that everybody can be great...because everybody can serve."

So to begin the process of opening your heart, think outward.

Wherever you go, believe you are sent.

Don't go to get something, go to share something.

Remember the secret of friendship is being a friend.

The secret of love is to give love and

the secret of healing is to do healing.

Look up the heart opening exercises in the very last New Jersey Massage newsletter and do them everyday.

The United States Marines are taught, from day one, to consider any impediment merely a temporary distraction from the objective and that when things look impossible, you just have to get more creative and step up.

Their adage is;

ADAPT, IMPROVISE, OVERCOME

The quote here is not just referring to overcoming the enemy outside of you, very often it's about overcoming the enemy inside; the fear that grips and immobilizes you, threatens your security thus your ego, has you play victim over and over again and persuades you to give away your power, to react instead of act.

Use your life, this short time you have on earth, to make a difference, to dream a big dream, to have a bright vision and to improve the quality of life of those around you. The bible states, "Those that have a vision for the future have a future filled with vision." Use yours to uplift and inspire, so when we eulogize you, we won't have to lie.

Stop spewing the negative, stop complaining, stop whining, whether it is about your miserable life, the economy, politics, or your bludgeoning waistline. Pain is pain; suffering is a matter of interpretation. When you live with this type of pessimism, you don't have to worry about things going to hell; you are already living in hell and this negative vibratory rate is making it more difficult for everyone else and just attracts the dark side around you.

Finally, "God spews out of his mouth the lukewarm."  Live your life passionately as if it were an affirmation for all that is good and great in people. As in the title of Hilda Charlton's amazing book,

"Hell-bent for Heaven."

DO IT!

"One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life; that word is love."
--Sophocles

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Compiled or written by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

WHOA...Recently a Purdue University study that included more than 40,500 Japanese men and women found that those that consumed five or more cups of green tea daily had the lowest risk of dying of heart disease and stroke. It was also found that if you add lemon juice to your green tea your body can absorb 13 times more of the good stuff, the catechins.

Some folks believe that it takes an estimated 10,000 hours of study and practice in any field of endeavor to be classified as a real professional. That's 10,000 hours of massage, 10,000 hours of REIKI, 10,000 of cooking or guitar playing or whatever. It takes 25,000 to be considered a Master and 35,000 and up to be considered a Grandmaster. Think about it.

Holistic Dr. Greger talks about blood types and the research just not coming up with the actual proof.

HOW TO OPEN YOUR HEART:

As if there was a nose in the center of your chest, breathe love into your heart center this moment. For the next couple of minutes, on every breath visualize this wonderful substance, this force of love entering into your chest and beginning to fill every cell of your body. From the top of your head to the tip of your toes feel love. If it makes it easier and more tangible put a color to the substance. Now as you breathe in, feel this love and

let a smile come to your lips. Breathe in...

smile. As you breathe out send this love out into the world. Keep repeating this exercise, breathe in love, smile...breathe out love to the world. If you like, lift your hands out in front of your body, as you breathe out. Direct the power. Again, breathe this delicious pink love into your heart center, smile...breathe love out to the children on this planet. Practice this all the time and there will come a time when you smile not only will your body light up filled with love but the room you are in and everyone around you will be touched by this most powerful of powers,

LOVE.

Raising the bar...I love this guys advice to musicians playing live music. The thing is, his attitude works for every profession in some way.

1. We're Having Technical Difficulties

Even if your guitar just caught fire. Well actually, that would be hilarious if you said it then. But when bands sheepishly admit it into the mic, it's uncomfortable and kills the vibe. Technical difficulties are your fault. Even when they're not. It's your stage. It's your show.

You should know your gear inside and out. If something is cutting out or screeching or feeding back, you should either know immediately what it is and be able to remedy it in 13 seconds or know how to quickly figure out what it is.

It's your job, as the performer, to command the attention of everyone in the room from start to finish.

2. I Forgot The Lyrics

The worst is when singer/songwriters sing a line like "I forgot this next line la la la." That is so annoying. Not funny. If you can't memorize your lyrics then bring a lyrics sheet on stage as reference. Or make shit up on the spot.

The only thing worse than shitty lyrics is forgotten lyrics.

3. I Want To Thank My Girlfriend

It's like having a one on one conversation with someone in the audience off the mic. Uncomfortable for everyone else in the house.

Leave her out of it. It makes you look whipped. If she did something truly awesome, then you can say something like "we'd like to thank our friend Sarah for getting this song into the hands of the music supervisor at Parenthood."

If your girlfriend needs to be publicly thanked for her support then you have bigger issues you have to work out.

4. I'm Sorry

Don't every apologize on stage. It makes you look weak. I don't care if you just dropped a baby. Don't apologize.

Making excuses for your shittyness makes everyone in the house uncomfortable and feel bad for you. I hear it all the time: "I forgot the rest of the song. Sorry." "I'm sorry if this song sucks, we just wrote it." "I'm sorry there aren't more people here." "We haven't rehearsed this much, it might suck."

Own the stage. Own the room. Own your set. Or don't show up.

5. Your City Sucks

Should be a no brainer, but I can't tell you how many touring bands I've seen make fun of the city they are in - ON STAGE. It may be fun to joke about in the van, but your audience takes pride in their city. No matter if you think their city is cool or not.

Never say anything negative about the town you are in while on stage unless you want a beer bottle thrown at you.

6. This Song Is About My Grandma Who Died Of Cancer. Love You Nana.

Don't depress your audience. You can play a song about your dead grandma, but you don't need to tell the audience that's what it's about.

People don't pay money to come to shows to be sad. They come to be happy. To have fun. To be enlightened. To be inspired.

If you can't communicate the power of your song by just playing it, then maybe the song isn't really that good.

7. I'm Broke

Don't make your audience feel bad for you. It removes the mystique and coolness factor. You can say "help us get to the next city and pick up a T-shirt." That offers an emotional appeal in a positive light.

But saying "we're broke, so buy a t-shirt," just turns your audience off.

Guilting your fans into buying your merch never works.

8. You Guys Suck

Even if 95 out of the 100 people are screaming above your acoustic set while smashing glasses and vomiting in the corner, 5 people are engulfed in your set. Never insult your audience. They always have one ear to you - even if you are just background music.

You may think no one is listening, but you'll be surprised at how many compliments you get and how much merch you sell once you hop off stage.

9. Any Requests

You're never going to get the songs that you actually have prepared and there will always be that one asshole who yells "Free Bird" as if he just came up with the joke.

Play your set as is. If someone drove 300 miles to hear one song, she'll yell it out whether you ask for it or not.

10. How Does It Sound

This is a slap in the face to the sound guy. Never ask the crowd that. It should sound amazing. If it doesn't, then it's either your fault or the sound guy's fault. Either way, you just pissed off the one person not in your band who can actually make you sound WORSE.

Subject: Tell NY to label GMOs

Right now a new bill to label genetically engineered foods is about to be introduced in the New York state assembly and thousands of mothers, farmers and activists across the state are joining together to show their support! Citizens in 62 other countries enjoy the basic right of knowing if their food has been genetically engineered, but for the past 20 years Americans have been denied this basic democratic right.

Already the opposition is working behind the scenes and we need your help today! If passed, New York would become the first state in the U.S. to require mandatory labeling of GMOs in our food.

At the moment, 13 new GMO crops are awaiting approval at the USDA, including Dow Chemical's 2,4-D Agent Orange corn and the "botox" GMO apple. At the same time, the FDA is getting ready to approve genetically engineered salmon. If approved, Aquabounty's GMO salmon would be the first genetically engineered animal allowed on the market and it would appear on your plates unlabeled!

With your help, we can change that! Join us to help make GMO labeling a reality in New York!

If we are what we eat, let us know what we're eating! It's time to label GMOs. Join us to help make GMO labeling a reality in New York! Please sign the petition below to make your voice heard:

MY FAVORITE THOUGHTS OF THE WEEK:

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it on living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other peoples thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. "

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change."
Charles Darwin

If you don't want your tax dollars to help the poor, then stop saying you want a country based on Christian values because you don't.
