"Only a life lived in service to others is worth living."

                                       Albert Einstein

"Thou shalt be a mandala to each other."

                                Richard Heisler

In his Sunday sermon, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. explained the importance of this commandment. Reading from the King James Bible, Book of Mark, Chapter Ten, Verses 35 through 45, we discover that Jesus' disciples James and John have a request for the master:

35 "Master," they said, "We would that thou shouldst do for us whatsoever we shall desire."

36 "And he said unto them, what would ye that I should do for you?"

37 " They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one at thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory."

And Jesus said,

40 "But to sit at my right hand and my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared."

43 "But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your servant."

44 "And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all."

After Dr. King read this passage he gave one of his most inspiring services. These are direct quotes from his sermon:

King said, "The setting is clear..., James and John are making a specific request of the master. They had dreamed..., as most of the Hebrews dreamed, of a coming King of Israel, who would set Jerusalem free and establish his kingdom on Mt. Zion and in righteousness rule the world. And they thought of Jesus as this kind of king and they were thinking of that day when Jesus would reign supreme, this new king of Israel. And they were saying now..., when you establish your kingdom..., let one of us sit on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand of your throne...

Now very quickly, we would automatically condemn James and John, we would say they were selfish. Why would they make such a selfish request? But before we dare condemn them too quickly, let us look calmly and honestly at ourselves... and we will discover that we too have those same basic desires for recognition..., for importance... That same desire for attention..., that same desire to be first. Of course the other disciples got mad at James and John and you could understand why... We must understand that we have some of the same James and John qualities. That in deep down..., in all of us..., an instinct..., it's a kind a... drum major instinct. A desire to be out front, a desire to lead the parade, a desire to be first. It is something that runs a whole gamut of life. And so before we condemn them, let us see that we all have the drum major instinct..., we all want to be important, to surpass others, to achieve distinction, to lead the parade."

Dr. King concluded his sermon with the following: "What was the answer that Jesus gave these men? It's very interesting..., one would have thought that Jesus would have condemned them..., one would have thought that Jesus would have said..., you're out of your place, you're selfish, why would you raise such a question. But that isn't what Jesus did. He did something altogether different you see, he said..., in substance..., Oh I see..., you want to be first?..., you want to be great?, you want to be important?, you want to be significant?!..., Well you ought a be...! if you're gonna be my disciple, you must be...! He re-ordered priorities..., and he said, yes, don't give up this instinct, it's a good instinct, if you use it right..., it's a good instinct, if you don't distort and pervert it..., don't give it up. Keep feeling the need for being important! Keep feeling the need for being first! But I want you to be first..., in love........! I want you to be first... in moral excellence! I want you to be first... in generosity! That is what I want you to do. He transformed the situation by giving a new definition of greatness. And you know how he said it..., he said now, brethren..., I can't give you greatness...and really, I can't make you first... This is what Jesus said to James and John..., you must earn it! True greatness comes not by favoritism but by fitness... And the right hand and the left are not mine to give..., they belong to those who are prepared...! And so Jesus gave us a new nom of greatness..., if you want to be important, wonderful..., if you want to be recognized, wonderful..., if you want to be great, wonderful...!, but recognize that he who is greatest among you..., shall be your servant. That's a new definition of greatness! And this morning..., the thing that I like about it..., by giving that definition of greatness... it means, that everybody can be great.... because everybody, can serve!"

Now to really fulfill this commandment; to serve, uplift and inspire one another, wherever you may go; you will need to know the following. There are both light and dark forces on this planet. The biblical concepts of alpha and omega, my father is a motion and a rest, strongly support this notion. Taoist cosmology says, from the one Great Spirit, come the two opposing forces, yin and yang, male and female. Successful life on this planet is a balancing of these two opposing forces, what the Taoists call yin and yang. Jesus supports this concept when he says, when you learn to balance your left hand from your right, your right hand from your left, the kingdom of heaven shall be open unto you.

Before we embrace the prime directive, before we even know our purpose in life, we are basically unimportant to the great scheme of things. As simple shmendricks, we can disappear in this great stew of life, left somewhat on our own recognizance. As long as we continue to have nothing really outstanding to contribute, meandering from one neurotic addiction/detour to another, this formula can basically stand pat.

However, the moment we decide to embrace the prime directive, everything changes. Physics tells us that "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction." When you begin to live in spirit and inspire those around you to evolve, you become a danger to the forces of entropy, to the dark side. All of a sudden, you are working on yourself. The greater your commitment to personal transformation, the greater the chance that you will create a remarkable shift in your life. Not only do you become more and more extraordinary, but this evolutionary transformation will also influence the lives of everyone around you, everyone the universe sends your way. Over the course of your life you will touch the lives of thousands, perhaps even millions of people. With all this growth, you are now a threat to the stability (chaos) of the planet. If you are fulfilling your natural destiny to evolve, you have chosen sides. Remember, Mahatma Gandhi was virtually unknown before the age of sixty.

Sidebar: The clearer you are, the more deeply the people you meet will be transformed. Sometimes, all it will take is a word. It has to be the exact right word at that exact right time. If you met a saint in the elevator, what would that saint say? If they read you spiritually, the magic of that moment could plant the seed to change your entire life. So now, imagine yourself as that saint. You must be so empty of yourself that you can discern and intuit what that word or phrase is for a person you've never met. There are only a limited number of people you can touch in the course of your life.

Get out there, the clock is ticking.

WARNING: Be vigilant, because the dark side is much more sophisticated than you can imagine. It is fueled by the earth's natural order and it can lurk in the shadows of your lower self. It can come up with ways to throw you off your spiritual path that are brilliant and devastating. Remember, there is no good or bad in this, just opposing forces performing their endless dance of life on this planetary level. It's the way this place has been set up. Don't gripe. You will go beyond it, in time.

There are three main ways the dark side will try to keep you from coming into your power:

It will bring up your old, neurotic tapes and inequities,
the circumstances that have pressed your buttons since you were a youngster. These button-pressing annoyances can include; fears, insecurities, jealousies, impatience, your weight, the size of your body parts, your hair, the size of your nose or butt; all in all, your immature ego junk. The dark side will find ways to mess with you, endlessly keeping you on the treadmill of reacting to this stuff. Like a bad dream, you'll be on a permanent detour, a victim of your mind. That is, until you stop feeding it. And when that happens, you will move on and lose interest in fueling and supporting your lower ego junk.

The temptations of life can be very attractive. Money, power, security, companionship, and status, are very alluring and intoxicating. After you have made the decision to grow, the fun begins. The tests will come when you least expect them. From left field or right in your own circle. Do you remember what the devil, played by Al Pacino, said in the movie Devil's Advocate? "I'm the hand up Mona Lisa's dress. They never see me coming."'re eating really well for perhaps, the first time. Praying and meditating regularly, staying optimistic, exercising, taking your vitamins, studying, really getting your life together. Then, "poof", you show up on the dark side's radar and suddenly, you get this great job offer, or the seemingly perfect man or woman comes into your life, or the investment of a life time becomes available or ____________________(fill in the blank).

All the dark side needs to do is give you a detour. If we can be detoured at critical times in our life, our life can amount to nothing much really. Most people go from one detour to another and at the end of their life you hear them exclaim, "I had so many dreams, so many opportunities, I don't know where the time has gone."

Just remember Jesus out on the desert. He drew a sacred circle around himself for protection. When the devil came and did his best to lure the master over to the dark side, Jesus was capable of resisting. Be on the lookout for the detours, pay attention, and use a jaundiced eye.

Sometimes you can lead an impeccable life with few karmic mistakes, and stuff still happens. You know, that "only the good die young" idea. The last way the dark side can detour your life is really not the dark side's own creation. We might define it as the negative power influencing our life but really it's of our own creation. In our soul's evolution, in our past lives, we have done things that are less than admirable. Haven't you complained about Murphy's Law (everything that can go wrong, will go wrong) some time in your life? There have certainly been times in my life where it has seemed all too much. Ram Dass used to say something like this, "Thank you God for putting me through such crap." Chalk it up to all those misspent past lives. Since we reap what we sow, and in the grand scheme of things there is no time line, it's quite possible that your suffering today is a product of some long past one comeuppance. Maybe you come from a family of slave traders, butchers, or warriors. Maybe you were in the Crusades or killed in self defense. Who knows? We have all witnessed wonderful people suffering terribly for no apparent reason. Like we said before, the only way to circumvent the unknown payoffs from coming our way is through service. Serving humankind is like working off a bad debt. You can lessen your karma's severity by consistently thinking outward with an open heart. That's why they call it karma yoga, the yoga of service.

If you were to die right this very instant, what would your eulogy sound like? "He was a wonderful man/woman, a devoted father/mother and friend. Remember the year he donated money to the United Way and when he helped out for the school play?" When eulogizing a deceased love one, it's natural for a minister to be generous with praise and accolade. At my own father's funeral, the eulogy made him almost unrecognizable. It was, however, very consoling for my mother.

Have you ever been to a funeral service where the deceased wasn't one of the greatest people that ever lived?

Florinda Donner-Grau is one of Carlos Castenada's teachers. Castenanda was a very successful author and spiritual teacher in the 20th century. His remarkable books outlined the shamans with whom he studied, and their mystical ways he explored. In a wonderful interview written by Michael Brennan and published in the Utne Reader, Florinda says, "Death is your truest friend, and your most reliable adviser. If you ever have doubts about the course of your life, you have only to consult your death for proper direction. Death will never lie to you."

Wouldn't it be cool if the minister at your own funeral could say with total honesty, that you lived an impeccable life? How you made a personal stand for truth, for people and for children. How you touched people's hearts with your warmth and your humor, and most importantly, how you touched people's hearts with your love.

"It was in particular, the amazing quality of your love that inspired us to be better people ourselves. Your committed, devoted life improved the quality of our lives and that made a powerful difference in our world."

Why couldn't this be your eulogy? Why can't we step up to this?

Jesus said "Renew yourself by the renewing of your mind." So this moment, this very instant while you are reading these words, talk to yourself. Believe that this is what your life can be about. And know it! Hilda called this immediate adjustment of the mind "an instant shock of God awakening."

Remember the master's words, "Far greater things, you shall do, than I have done." It's time to begin a dialogue with you. To push yourself to become most extraordinary, you have to prime the divine pump in yourself to bring out your own mojo. Remember the revelation John Belushi's character had in church in The Blues Brothers? He heard from on high....he was on a Mission from God! Aren't we all on a mission from God? Live today with the same level of honesty and sincerity you would if it were your last day.

There was a great Cuban shaman (Santeria) in Jersey City named Orestes who devoted his life to practicing the healing art of spiritual medicine. He would invoke the healing powers and direct them to purge his patients of their afflictions. He was real, he was spiritually beautiful, and was he powerful. On Mondays, Orestes would invite selected people from the public to his studio. It was there he would teach and transform the room into a spiritual vortex for healing, and like a coach, he made you believe in your innate ability to feel, to intuit and to develop your inner sight. He would scream at us, "Open your eyes! What do you see?" Orestes didn't really care if we saw the person's aura or energy field. He was trying to get us to see beyond our limitations, so he would keep banging at us, "What do you see?" We could have said anything, "I see orange or I see a rainbow." It didn't really make a difference as long as e were attempting to project our inner sight. Orestes would continue, "Open your heart...what do you feel? Go beyond your little self.....use your God given gifts! USE YOUR GIFTS! OPEN YOUR HEART!" After two hours of banging down our own egos and week after week of pushing ourselves beyond our spiritual limits, our inner voices and sight gradually awakened, and new healing sensibilities would take hold.

The point is, to fulfill the prime directive and actually live up those powerful words, you are going to need to talk to yourself, to psyche yourself up daily with a tremendous optimism. You literally have to step up as if you were a great spiritual athlete. There is, however, one thing that you can do to top the original great eulogy. Perhaps the only life-path more profoundly graced than expressed before. Live up to all those amazing words and do it anonymously. You heard me right. Leave no trail, particularly if your life really changed the world. In his books, Carlos Castaneda introduces us to his teacher, a master shaman called Don Juan. Don Juan taught Carlos Castaneda, "It is imperative to leave aside what is called personal history." In a divine state the "me", as in personal importance, just doesn't count.

I've worked with many people while they were in the final stages of their lives and found that those who served, uplifted, and inspired the most were the most blessed. They were also not as afraid of dying. In fact, they were very much at peace. The only thing you can bring with you to the other side is the growth you have acquired, and one of the only ways I know to circumvent life's travails is by making a powerful difference.

If what you reap is what you sow and every action has an equal and opposite reaction, then be first in excellence, be first in love, and be first in service. Use your every waking moment to inspire your brothers and sisters into awake-ness and establish yourself as a center of peace and unconditional love.

"The love you take is equal to the love you make."

"This official note is long overdue. Just now stumbled across your email address! So many times I think of my priceless gift of joining your classes at the North Jersey Massage Training Center. ALL of the classes I took were exceptional! They were professionally taught, appropriately covered the specific areas or specialties, and I have used them all here on Maui at the spa where I work. Head and shoulders above all (no Pun intended!) was the class covering the neck and shoulders. You would be amazed at the wonderful results and happy clients. One gentleman said, "I have had massages literally around the world at Four Seasons Hotels and the best Asian hotels. Your massage is the best I ever had!" Another one said, "That was excellent! That is the best massage I ever had." When people go out with those comments after massage I am pleased too. They feel great! And I am grateful to have studied with you and added to my continuing education in such a worthwhile manner."

A Practical Theory and Hands-on Approach

with Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT
10AM-6PM 8 CE Hours $175

Over 45 million Americans (about one in six) suffer chronic headaches each year.  Headaches therefore have a big economic impact -- when you have a throbbing pain in your head, it's hard to work.  The cost of these headaches in absenteeism and medical expenses is estimated as high as $50 billion per year.  Annually, people seeking treatment for headache pain account for 8 million consultations with physicians.  There are multiple causes of headaches and while most of these causes are not in the domain of massage therapy, tension and structural causes which account for many, are.  Join us for a comprehensive look at headaches and a surefire treatment plan that can be utilized for headache sufferers regardless of what the cause might be.  We have created a sophisticated massage therapy protocol for headache relief combining medical massage techniques like trigger point therapy, connective and deep tissue bodywork with traditional shiatsu for the neck, shoulders and upper back.

"This was the class I much needed and hoped for. It provided many techniques I will use everyday with my clients. Larry goes beyond my expectations of an average class and presents an outstanding class. I will be back again for another of Larry's classes."

Adding Shiatsu to your massage will supercharge your work!

Shiatsu is a deeply powerful and complete form of bodywork, respected worldwide and based on thousands of years of empirical data. What's more profound is that the meridian system and its specific acu-points have a deep influence on our musculature, the internal organ conditions and the immune and nervous systems. Join us for this one day workshop, where Larry will teach you how to add the most powerful shiatsu lines and points to supercharge your Swedish massage.

"The first 8,000 massage treatments I performed in my career were Traditional Barefoot Shiatsu sessions. I had studied for years with the Macrobiotic and Japanese Masters Michio Kushi and Sensei Masahiro Oki and was amazed at their breath of wisdom, power and effectiveness. There wasn't any type of overhead bar or other props in the early 1970's and you did not walk on your client's body. Instead it was a very sophisticated form of bodywork using many parts of your own body to treat your client while concentrating on the energy lines called meridians and specific acupuncture points called tsubos."

It's not just from the increased revenue, which is nice; it's also about how well the stones fit into a great massage therapy session. The ability to use heated stones to sculpt muscle and provide exceptional deep tissue work is an added advantage. Unfortunately many facilities here in New Jersey have been cautious about offering Hot Stone Massage lately and with good reason, many burns and injuries have been reported. As one of the original three schools in NJ, we are all too aware of what is happening in our industry. To counter the bad press and a recent rash of insurance mandates, we are excited to offer a personalized two day Hot Stone training that will give you the tools and fulfill the recent additional educational requirements by your professional organizations. Our instructor, Paul Dobo is thelead therapist and lead corporate trainer for Hand and Stone. Paul travels the country teaching protocols and contraindications for hot stone massage and w

e believe our program is a cut above. From the history of hot stone usage and a comprehensive review of protocols needed to set up a great stone practice, to the specific routines you will employ and the specialized therapeutic techniques you will learn, we will help you understand, develop and successfully administer a hot stone practice.

The secret to a great massage is sometimes found in the humblest of places!

Foot and hand work is something most massage therapists are weak in. For whatever reason, many schools gloss over this very important part to your massage. At our school we teach that good foot and hand work can be the difference between a satisfied client and one that will go elsewhere. This class will help you hone your foot and hand work, giving you a new, fresh approach that will have your clients returning again and again for more. Our deep tissue approach includes the neuromuscular trigger point work that will help eradicate pain and tension as in addressing plantar fasciitis or arthritic hand complaints and combine the most powerful shiatsu points on the legs and arms, feet and hands. The acupuncture/acupressure points in Japan are known as tsubos. The specific tsubos called the Go, Gen, Sei points are one the secrets to an extraordinary session in Japanese shiatsu or Chinese Tui Na. This is not a reflexology class that requires a completely different serious course of study. The combination of trigger points and shiatsu makes it some of the most powerful foot and hand massage work you'll ever experience.

You will dig this class and so will your hands and feet!

Cheryl is one of the most popular cancer massage educators in the USA!

We are much honored to present our former graduate and the former President of the NJ Chapter of American Massage Therapy Association in this important training program.  This class fulfills insurance regulations requiring a basic mandatory understanding of utilizing massage therapy for cancer patients, as well as touching on life-altering illnesses. Cheryl will address the contraindications and the anatomy and physiology to positioning, draping, massage techniques, legal issues and documentation. This workshop is open to all levels of massage and bodywork practitioners, hospice caregivers and health care providers - especially those interested in cancer care.

"Cheryl is very knowledgeable and approachable. Her desire to share massage as a healing presence and as a way to reconnect with the body, grows from a place of genuine care. Her class is informative, practical and inspirational. Thank you!"

Study finds that vaccine does not lessen influenza illness severity!

CIDRAP - Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy Nov 27, 2013

"The influenza vaccine did not reduce the risk of hospitalization for flu after vaccine failure, according to an analysis of 8 years of data published yesterday in Vaccine.

Over eight flu seasons starting in 2004, scientists from the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation in Marshfield, Wis., enrolled all adults who presented with an acute respiratory infection. They recorded hospital admissions within 14 days after illness onset for all those with lab-confirmed influenza.

The investigators found that patients who had received the trivalent flu vaccine had no significant reduction in risk of hospitalization for any type of influenza or for the influenza A or B subgroups. Adjusted odds ratios were 1.08 for any influenza, 1.35 for influenza A, and 0.67 for influenza B.

The authors conclude, "These findings do not support the hypothesis that vaccination mitigates influenza illness severity."

Sometimes I find exceptional articles or videos that I like to share with you.

Here's a bunch that I enjoyed this week.

The Natural News is a regular column that is sent to me. This particular article on lowering cholesterol I found particularly interesting. Of course I have to post a disclaimer stating you should always check these approaches out with your health care provider.

Just so you know a common opinion amongst therapists... are massage franchises destroying profession?
