WHY YOU FEEL SO BADLY TODAY:

Understanding THE DAY ONE AND DAY FOUR DETOXES

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

Over the summer we went to Sandy Hook for a beach day. On our way home we passed a summertime ice cream stand. The sign said now serving "Black Raspberry Soft Serve!" Kathy turned to me as we passed the stand and said, "We haven't had one ice cream cone all summer, come on, let's turn around and get a cone, let's celebrate what little is left of summer." She was yearning to fulfill one of those early childhood memories, the joy and guilt free playfulness of our youth on a hot summers eve. So dutifully I doubled back around and we licked our way to sugar nirvana. Afterwards I reminded Kathy of the four day rule.

In the early 1970's I had the privilege to study with the martial arts and Oriental medicine Master Sensei Masahiro Oki. Sensei Oki explained to us that whatever we ingest takes up to four days to discharge from our body. He believed it was on the fourth day that you would feel the full brunt of the substance eaten. Now I was familiar with theories like this because two of my most respected teachers, Michio Kushi, the man who promulgated the macrobiotic lifestyle to the world and Dr. Marshall Mandel, of the Four Day Rotation Diet fame consistently talked about our bodies discharge/detox mechanics. Michio was always quick to remind us to take a daily inventory, an assessment of how we were feeling day to day and even hour to hour. He felt it was a key to understanding our personal health, rhythms and needs. So my energy level today along with my daily aches, pains, sneezes, stiffness, headaches, whatever and even my emotional train of thought, (be that depression, anxiety, anger, joy, ambition or happiness) was directly linked and triggered by what I had consumed in the recent past. Michio called this process simple self reflection and he sincerely felt that it was a key to healing.

Dr. Mandell on the other hand, was one of the world's leading allergists. He was one of the first to provide a scientific structure to the field of allergy and through his work; we have come to understand the important relationship between allergy, sensitivity and neurological problems. In other words Dr. Mandel could trigger sometimes dramatic symptoms in patients by simply introducing their body to normal substances they were highly sensitive or reactive to like dairy, gluten, peanuts or beef. Very often the reacting individual was not aware of their sensitivity and didn't realize that their emotional or learning disorder was directly linked to and manipulated by their daily eating habits. Dr. Mandel was the physician that taught us that people often crave the foods they are sensitive to and when they crave something it usually means that it's leaving or discharging from their body. Kind of like an addict that needs their next fix. Dairy, wheat and sugar would all take around three months to leave our body and go below the level or threshold of negative symptoms. He believed that as long as we stay below that level, we would be symptom free. He also showed that by abstaining from these identified specific allergy trigger foods his patients would have dramatic improvements and get better. Interestingly, they would get better from both physical and psychological conditions by simply giving up the foods that were identified as reactive. So when I was Director of Nutrition for the medical complex back in the early 1980's, my first question to you would be, "Tell me what you absolutely love to eat." Whatever you said, I would take you off of and usually you would see a major improvement.

So our soft serve consumption was on a Sunday and by Thursday our four days were up. When I woke on that morning I was feeling quite compromised and as the day wore on I was feeling like I had gotten hit by a baseball bat all over my body. I had symptoms of low energy and achiness, almost as if a cold was coming on.  Then I remembered the four day rule and that junky soft serve we ate! So I impishly called Kathy at work and asked how she was feeling. She said she was feeling horrible and wondered why because we were eating very clean over the previous couple of days, that is, until I reminded her of the Four Day Rule and our trespass into the dark side. We both laughed and acknowledged our binge and realized that this was the worst of it and by day five and six things would rapidly go back to normal. So pay attention to your day to day patterns and get into the habit of connecting your daily lifestyle dots.

Another rule for me is when I am eating really well and I feel under the weather, I know my body is detoxing but when I'm eating poorly and feel bad, that's my body aging and degenerating.

Remember, your blood makes every cell of your body and every cell of your body, makes up the organs you have. The key to healthy blood and healthy functioning organs is what you eat. It's what you eat that turns into blood in the first place and then your blood turns into your cells and simplistically speaking your cells then make up all of your organs. Your brain is an organ too.

When you put junk in, you will certainly get junk out.

This can also be an explanation as to why some Americans are getting much smarter. A dramatic increase in the consumption of green leafy vegetables, organic fruits and vegies, salad bars, great vitamin supplements, health and yoga facilities have all significantly improved the state of our health and intelligence. So it shouldn't be surprising when you are trying to connect the dots that it's all interrelated, body, mind, emotions and spirit. In Oriental medicine, imbalance and sickness in anyone of these areas translates to sickness in all. They do not separate the body from the mind or emotions. We are one whole. Think about it.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

How to get a strong bodily electrical charge

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

In Oriental Medicine the definition of pain is an imbalance or blockage in the electrical system of the body (sometimes called the Energetic System). The reason our body needs to maintain alkalinity, a mildly salty condition is specifically to keep and conduct a charge. Salt water is a mild conductor of electric. Individuals that have a strong electrical bodily charge are wired in a very healthy way and heal much more quickly. When your bloodstream is alkaline your body also has a maximum of oxygen. An oxygen enriched environment heals quicker and protects itself better particularly from serious degenerative illness like cancer.  The reason our bloodstream needs to be alkaline and maintain homeostasis (ph 7.35) is to maintain our health. So we are kind of like an acupuncture needle on the surface of the planet. As long as we are standing up, we take an actual charge from our environment. The electrical charge enters into us at the spiral on the top of our head and the magnetic charge enters us through the perineum just above your anus. This electro-magnetic charge innervates your spine and nervous system and when you have a system that is highly charged it is said that those individuals are more sensitive and spiritually connected. All that begins with your charge and your charge is dependent on your wiring. Here's how to increase it.

1.       Himilayan Crystal salt (www.americanbluegreen.com)

2.     Breathing Exercises and especially meditation

3.     Chi Kung/Tai Chi, Yoga

4.     Alkaline diet and foods like miso

5.     Deep Tissue Massage

6.     Getting sun on at least 1/3 of your body for ten minutes.

Why YOU SHOULD USE YOUR WEAKER HAND AND SIDE MUCH MORE OFTEN:

The Benefit in strengthening your weaker side

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

At age 92 my mother had a stroke and lost the usage of her right hand. As you might have heard, the right hand is associated with the analytical left hemisphere of the brain. This is the area responsible for our mathematical acuity, our technical, detail oriented side. Interestingly, it was this specific side in mom's brain that was not hooked up all to well as she was struggling with senile dementia. On day three after her stroke, I arrived at the hospital in the morning and upon my way in to mom's room I was grabbed by one of her regular physicians. He was excited and began questioning me, "Did Tony Bennett ever sing I Left My Heart in San Francisco while bending down on one knee exclusively for your mother and was your mother and your dad famous dancers? "Yes," I said, "yes to both." and as I began to expound upon the details, the doc stopped me and said, "Holy mackerel! Her brain has returned...!" Apparently the stroke or being forced to use her left hand for eating, grooming and the like, stimulated the right hemisphere of her brain. The right hemisphere is thought to be the creative, spiritual, improvisational side and for some reason it didn't get the memo that mom had dementia. All of a sudden she was lucid and perhaps the first time in years. And while no one really knew for sure, my teachers have always encouraged us to strengthen our weaker side, saying it would have profound spiritual effects and open doors to higher consciousness.

One of the many exercises that balance the two hemispheres of the brain looks like this. Raise your left arm up and down. Do it a couple of times. Now raise your right arm, up, out and then down. Do that a couple of times. NOW...do them together, your left up and down and your right, up, out and down. It will take practice. Once you got it, change sides. With practice and maybe brushing your teeth and holding the fork with your left hand, you can begin to think simultaneously from both hemispheres of your brain. That would make you Einstein. Practice makes perfect.

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY:

compiled or written by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

World expert on trauma and healing Bill Spear gave an amazing talk on populations that have been lived through terrible disasters and suffering. These notes below are from his presentation, I apologize for paraphrasing.

Trauma= loss of control, fear of physical harm or death.
Everyone on this planet has experienced some form of trauma or close call in their lives. Of course some are much, much more tragic and profound than others. These powerful experiences set themselves deeply into the sensing body, as in stuffed down and buried. They can result into a lifetime of distorted emotions unless they are processed and expressed. When Spear's team goes into a village to work with the children that have been severely traumatized by a tsunami, mass murder, earthquake, whatever; in any village, any children, anywhere; the team doesn't talk. Instead they engage the children with rhythm and clapping. All the communication initially is about expression. By moving, dancing, clapping, drumming, shouting, screaming, the children begin the healing process. It's the sensing body that registers the deep and painful trauma. The physical expression begins to loosen the shock and encourages the individual healing process.

When anger is stuffed down or a person is shut up, shooshed, or denied their emotions; the blockage can go deep and at some future time can turn to passive aggression, criticism, rage, imploded anger, violence and even war. Those that are beaten as a child have a tendency toward a warlike mentality. Spear said that as a child, Hitler was chained to his bed and beaten by his father. Blind rage will come out when you cannot express yourself. You need to get out your tears, you need to move, dance, express, scream or shake as a way of processing. He especially cautioned that individuals that have serious unprocessed, pushed down traumas or emotions very often transfer their emotional distortions on the ones they love. As in rejected or conditional love, the recipient of this controlled or doled out crucial emotion can become distorted, demanding, controlling, possessive and filled with expectations.

So the next time you are hanging with a friend that tends to wear their emotions on their sleeve, that talks the truth of how they are feeling and are in general emotionally expressive, it might not be as bad as you might have thought.

My favorite sayings this week...

Real friends don't get offended when you insult them. They smile and call you something even more offensive.

Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.

If you are reading this, you have survived your entire life up until this point. You have survived traumas, heartbreak, devastation, and the different phases of life.

And here you are...
 YOU GO MF.
YOU'RE AWESOME!
