HOW TO SPIRITUALLY OPEN YOUR HEART!
by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

"One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life; that word is love."   --Sophocles

My beloved teacher of meditation Hilda Charlton believed that the easiest path to liberation was by following the path of the heart (bhakti).  To her love was the most powerful force in the universe and that love was the answer to the question how.
She would bang at us, her students, incessantly pleading with us;

"Open your heart kids; come into your power by opening your heart."

In spiritual practice we often hear those words but what do they really mean and how do you go about doing it? Now you yoga buffs know that the fourth chakra in the chest is the yogic heart chakra.  It is described as an energy vortex that's the receptacle of compassion, service and unconditional love.  When a yogi or any spiritual adept raises their conscious awareness to the fourth chakra, they have evolved beyond their little ego self and have arrived in the domain of the sacred. In the 1960's Dr. Richard Alpert, a.k.a. Ram Dass inspired so many of us on our spiritual journeys with his best selling spiritual cookbook, Be Here Now.  In regard to the spiritual leap of consciousness from the lower, self absorbed ego centered chakra's (first three) to the fourth, Ram Dass wrote:

"If you had crossed the first great barrier (between the third and fourth charkas) so completely that all your energy was localized in the fourth chakra, then you would experience only the compassionate feelings of the brotherhood of the Spirit with all other beings.  Whether in a sexual embrace or in a business or social contact, the only feeling towards the other person would be of "us-ness.  Since you would no longer have any investment in yourself as a lower separate ego entity, all of your actions would be in perfect harmony with all the forces acting in the field at that moment.

You would be living in the Tao."
So we know when your heart is open it's not about you anymore.

You feel connected to the spirit, a love and kinship with all living things.

And when you consciously take a deep heartfelt breath a smile comes to your lips and your eyes blaze with an inner fire.

Your life becomes about service, about unconditional love.
You no longer see yourself as a victim, only a vehicle for teaching, for healing, for uplifting and serving those you come into contact with.
You are about your fathers work; it's no longer a personal issue or about your personal success.

It's your ego, your smaller self that takes things personally.

Your higher self can never play victim.

Below are two exercises that will open your heart.

HEART BREATHING

As if there was a nose in the center of your chest; breathe into your heart center this very moment. Now continue with every inhalation, visualize a golden substance of light entering into your heart. Feel it as a warm, healing vibration, touching every cell of your body. On your exhale, breathe that light up your spine and out the top of your head. So breathe into your heart and exhale breathing up your spine out the top of your head. As you exhale, let go of all your worldly baggage. Use your imagination. Now continue for a couple of minutes. One last addition...on the inhalation, close your eyes and let a smile come to your lips. As your heart warms and loosens and you start genuinely connecting with your inner source, your smile will become natural and you will be able to direct your exhale outward for healing purposes and intentions. Practice heart breathing regularly.

SMILING BUDDHA EXERCISE

Slightly bend your knees and keep your back straight. Stand with your arms outstretched in front of you as if you were hugging a tree trunk, arms in front, around shoulder height. Now breathe deep and rhythmic and "Get Empty."

I mean real empty. In this exercise your strength comes from emptiness. So, attempt to feel no weight in your body, no weight from holding up your arms, no thoughts in your mind, again...completely free and empty.

Now with your eyes closed,   smile
and see the light in your forehead.

With your empty body and empty arms continue hugging the tree, smiling and seeing the light in your head for at least 5 minutes to start everyday.

You will get really strong physically and the smiling will open your heart.  When you can see the light in your forehead 24/7,
you can call yourself enlightened.

  GIVE IT A TRY.

Smiling Budha

Don't forget to SMILE!

"This practice is part of an ancient Chinese health system of exercises.  One of the first references found about this type of exercise is in the Huang-Ti Nei Ching (Classics of Medicine by the Yellow Emperor, 2690-2590 B.C.E.) which is, by the way, probably one of the oldest books in the medical field.  This posture, practiced and transmitted secretly in martial arts circles, has been openly shown to the public since the last century.  Wang Xiang Zhai, a very famous martial arts master of that period in China, made of this technique the base of a new martial art that he called I Chuan (Mind Boxing). He used to say, "The immobility is the mother of any movement or technique."

Victoria Windholtz, Standing Like a Tree

In a Sunday sermon, Dr. Martin Luther King repeated the biblical reference, "He that would be first among you shall be your servant," and continued by saying, "The thing I like about that quote today..., by giving that definition of greatness...it means, that everybody can be first...because everybody can serve."  So begin the process of opening your heart also by thinking outward and serving others.  Wherever you go, believe you are sent. Don't go to get something, go to share something and remember Hilda's words, "The secret of friendship is to be a friend.  The secret of love is to give love unconditionally and the secret of healing is to do healing work."

OPEN YOUR HEART!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Compiled or written by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

Nutrition Gems:

The new form of Co Q 10 is called Ubiquinol. The research of this potent antioxidant shows that it is dramatically more bio-available than the older version many of us have taken for years. If you have circulation or energy issues anywhere in your body, Google ubiquinol and read about it. So many of my friends take it because it counteracts the serious oxygen deficits acquired from statin drugs, chronic fatigue, circulatory issues to gums, reproductive organs, extremities, etc. We have the really good stuff at the office, if you'd like to order a bottle.

Years ago Durk Pearson of the Life Extension fame put a small article in the Townsend Letter for Doctors. Essentially he mentioned that he had a very serious skin cancer situation he was battling and that he created a potent antioxidant cream that he applied topical for a couple of weeks. He then reported that his condition was in total remission from the applications and he speculated why he believed his concoction was so effective.

Recently a favorite vitamin manufacturer introduced a very potent vitamin E capsule that wasn't tocopherols but the other side of the vitamin E family called tocotrienols. Tocotrienols allegedly are hundreds of times more powerful than the vitamin E tocopherols that most of us have been taking daily in our vitamins. I have been using tocotrienols internally for years too but this newest, latest product was at least three times more potent than the product I initially used and sold online and at my office. So I decided to test the new product on three skin cancer victims, one being myself. A simple pin prick and I squeezed out the liquid onto my finger and applied it to the edge of my ear. I've had a scab on that ear for two years now. I should also add that I never wear hats. Two weeks and the scab has disappeared completely. Two other friends are testing the same product and both have initially reported very, very excellent results. I have the slightest notion if squeezing out a vitamin e capsule onto my finger and using it topically is a potent natural remedy or not. Read the amazing and abundant literature about tocotrienols and decide for yourself.

I've always been a pain in the ass. When I was Director of Nutrition for the Parsippany Medical Complex, I drove everyone crazy. Eat this, drink that, take this supplement. I guess I'm still that way. I probably was a really sick guy in a past life. Check that, in a lot of past lives. If you've been reading these newsletters, you've read about alkaline water, Vitamin D, tocotrienols, Ubiquinol, complex carbohydrates, antioxidants, flexibility and longevity, yoga, meditation and of course massage, massage, massage. This month it's a repeat with miso and broccoli sprouts.      I've been telling my friends for many years now to add broccoli sprouts to their salads. Now according to researchers at John Hopkins University, broccoli sprouts have the same super disease fighting capabilities as other vegetables in the cabbage family, only dramatically more. Sold at supermarkets and health food stores, these little babies will make an extremely healthy addition to your daily regimen. Google it, you'll be amazed.     Miso is a superfood dating back at least 2500 years, made from a combination of soybeans, grain and salt, fermented in large wood barrels. Japanese mythology extols miso as a gift from the gods for health, happiness and longevity. There are as many types of miso as there are wines. Traditionally used as miso soup; a combination of wakame seaweed, tofu and fresh chopped scallions on the top. Miso paste can be used as the base and seasoning for any type of soup whether that be lentil, split pea or barley vegetable. It's usually added to the soup at the very end and is hardly ever cooked. According to the Japanese Cancer Institute, those that consumed miso on a daily basis had a 50% lower cancer rate than those that did not consume miso at all. According to Anna Bond, author of Working Alchemy: The Miracle of Miso, "An excellent source of digestive enzymes, friendly bacteria, essential amino acids, vitamins (including vitamin B-12), easily assimilated protein (twice as much as meat or fish and 11 times more than milk) and minerals, miso is low in calories and fat. It breaks down and discharges cholesterol, neutralizes the effects of smoking and environmental pollution, alkalizes the blood and prevents radiation sickness. Miso has been used to treat certain types of heart disease and cancer."

"Miso belongs to the highest class of medicines, those which prevent disease and strengthen the body through continued usage."

Dr. Shinichiro Akizuki,
Director, St. Francis Hospital, Nagasaki

Larry's Miso Soup Recipe: Half pot water, crumble a couple of strips of dried wakame seaweed, couple of garlic cloves, a small onion sliced, grated fresh ginger, couple of carrots and celery, tofu cake cubed. Cook with other veggies like mushrooms or cabbage if you like. After the soup is well prepared, shut off flame and add fresh watercress, fresh chopped scallions and miso to taste. Don't make too salty. I really enjoy South River Brand Organic Mugi Miso (Three Year Barley Miso). For a large pot of soup, I start with about ¼ jar, mix and taste and add more if needed. Never cook miso and never boil the soup when warming it up. Voila you have soup for a bunch of days.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
