FOOD FOR THOUGHT: REVIEW: Programming your Intentions, the companies that defeated Prop 37 in Calif., GMO Bill in NJ Senate, great free movie in Boonton, NJ, Larry's Miso Soup and Quotes in the news.

by Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

It has been speculated by many that geniuses can channel both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. It has also been speculated and then later dis-proven?, that Albert Einstein had no corpus callosum, the very large bundle of nerve fibers that separate the two hemispheres of the brain. Implying that Einstein had total access to both sides of his brain at will, thus the engine of his great genius. Most of us rely on one side or other depending on whether we are reading someone else's writing or doing our own writing. Let's do a simple review. The left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for computations, processing and analyzing. Right handed or right side dominant folks access the left hemisphere more readily. The right hemisphere of the brain is the creative, improvisational perhaps even mystical or spiritual side. For most folks the two sides are not in balance and we need both to be fully functioning, at least to be at our peak of performance. There are certain types of exercise that can engage and strengthen our weaker side's tendencies. These exercises are called Split Brain Exercises. Really anytime you are multitasking you are in a split brain but some exercises really can stand out like playing the bass notes with the left hand and simultaneously playing the melody with the right. If you do a lot of split brain tasks like holding the fork or brushing your teeth with your less dominant hand you will strengthen your weaker side. I know getting used to using your weaker hand or leg can strengthen the brain and many yogis recommend that exercise to improve their student's ability to meditate. Meditation itself seems to be the ultimate split brain exercise and with committed practice meditation will allegedly unlock both hemispheres of the brain. I say allegedly because I haven't personally seen the scientific literature on that but I have been a devout mediator in my life and after teaching 3,500 meditation classes over 38 years I believe accessing both hemispheres of the brain is something that average folk can do and experience regularly. Whether Einstein had a dividing line between his two hemispheres I also can't speak about but he certainly did meditate and confirmed on many occasions that it wasn't his logical brain that was the vehicle to his wisdom.

When my mom reached 92, it's fair to say she had lost touch with reality. Pretty near the end of her life, perhaps days before she passed, she had a stroke that left her right side paralyzed. We had to teach her to begin compensating by using her left hand to hold a fork, a napkin, even a cup. That's when everyone began to notice mom's senile dementia had disappeared and she was carrying on completely cogent conversations with complete recall. The entire medical staff along with the immediate family marveled at the juxtaposition in her behavior and especially her cognition. As if her mental faculties had returned. When she was right side dominant (right handed), the left hemisphere of her brain controlled things and that side had the confusion, the dementia. Remember the left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for things like analyzing and processing which mom couldn't do for a long time. Now after the stroke, mom was using her left hand, left leg, probably her left ear and eye to boot. That changed her brain over to the right hemisphere, the creative, improvisational side. That side didn't get the memo about the dementia so in a New York minute mom was back with all her faculties. Of all the creative, even extraordinary ways to develop accessing both hemispheres, the Smiling Buddha Exercise is certainly one of my very favorites.

So here's an amazing martial arts split brain exercise that will:

        boost your immune system,

        open your heart,

give you strength and power and

        promote your personal ENLIGHTENMENT

no joke.

Slightly bend your knees and keep your back straight. Stand with your arms outstretched in front of you as if you were hugging a tree trunk, arms in front, around shoulder height. Now breathe deep and rhythmic and "Get Empty."

I mean real empty. In this exercise your strength comes from emptiness. So attempt to feel no weight in your body, no weight from holding up your arms, no thoughts in your mind, again...completely free and empty.

Now with your eyes closed,

see the light in your forehead.

With your empty body and empty arms continue hugging the tree, smiling and seeing the light in your head for at least 5 minutes to start everyday. You will get really strong physically and the smiling will open your heart.
When you can see the light in your forehead 24/7,
you can call yourself enlightened.

"This practice is part of an ancient Chinese health system of exercises.  One of the first references found about this type of exercise is in the Huang-Ti Nei Ching (Classics of Medicine by the Yellow Emperor, 2690-2590 B.C.E.) which is, by the way, probably one of the oldest books in the medical field.  This posture, practiced and transmitted secretly in martial arts circles, has been openly shown to the public since the last century.  Wang Xiang Zhai, a very famous martial arts master of that period in China, made of this technique the base of a new martial art that he called I Chuan (Mind Boxing).  He used to say, "The immobility is the mother of any movement or technique."   Victoria Windholtz, Standing Like a Tree

It truly very important that we develop our healing abilities so that we can successfully support our own inner journey. Worldwide, the first level of Reiki training, or Reiki I, is often the key that opens the healing door for many seeking healing. For those who practice Reiki daily, their lives are forever positively changed, with immediate, lasting and often miraculous results. The Reiki I and Reiki II classes offered by the New Jersey Massage Continuing Education program is a traditional Usui Reiki training where you learn to do hands-on healing within the first hour of class. All the teachings are given as specific healing techniques, including mental, emotional and spiritual healing. Reiki I focuses on learning practices to heal yourself; Reiki II focuses on learning practices to heal others.

A manual which gives the class teachings in printed form is included for each level of training. Prerequisite for Reiki I is the commitment to a daily Reiki healing practice on yourself.

Betsy Browder is a traditional Usui Reiki Lineage teacher who has taught Usui Reiki to groups and individuals around the U.S. She has been trained in traditional Usui Reiki by being apprenticed to a Lineage teacher. She has practiced Reiki daily for over twenty five years. She is also an ordained interfaith minister and university graduate.

Ultimate Face and Foundation

with Larry Heisler, M.A. LMT

Tuesday, 3/26 10-6pm 8 CE Hours $175

This remarkable class addresses both the core of your client and their face, scalp and head. Core work is called Ampuku in Japan (shiatsu) and sometimes called either Tui Na or Chi Nei Tsang in China and Korea respectively. It uses the energy and martial arts principles of Qi-Gong/Chi-Kung as it comprises gentle, non- invasive visceral massage with energetic breath techniques and specific, very powerful abdominal acupressure BO points. Traditional Ampuku often results in a profound sense of well-being, deep, deep relaxation and/or a cleansing, detoxifying stimulation. In Taoist circles it is used to simultaneously heal the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual and is revered for its immune boosting qualities. Our face, scalp and head work includes our ever popular Acupressure Face Lift, assuring that your clientele will look younger and fresher after your session with them, once again significantly adding to your repertoire, effectiveness and "bottom line."

Headaches and Medical Massage  with Larry Heisler, M.A., LMT

Over 45 million Americans (about one in six) suffer chronic headaches each year.  Headaches therefore have a big economic impact -- when you have a throbbing pain in your head, it's hard to work.  The cost of these headaches in absenteeism and medical expenses is estimated as high as $50 billion per year.  Annually, people seeking treatment for headache pain account for 8 million consultations with physicians.  There are multiple causes of headaches and while most of these causes are not in the domain of massage therapy, tension and structural causes which account for many, are.  Join us for a comprehensive look at headaches and a surefire treatment plan that can be utilized for headache sufferers regardless of what the cause might be.  We have created a sophisticated massage therapy protocol for headache relief combining medical massage techniques like trigger point therapy, connective and deep tissue bodywork with traditional shiatsu for the neck, shoulders and upper back.

"Since GE foods were first introduced in the U.S. food supply in 1996 without our knowledge or consent these foods have increased to 94% of soy crops and 88% of corn crops. Despite the prevalence of GE foods in the food supply the USDA continues to rely on industry safety studies to determine public health impacts of these foods. These organisms which are dominated by Monsanto's BT soy and corn (a registered pesticide with the EPA) sprayed with glyphosate (Round Up) cause transgenic contamination of organic crops which has also cost small scale organic farmers their livelihoods while threatening biodiversity through polluting rivers, streams and being found in the human bloodstream."

MISO SOUP: The Great Alkalizer

The story goes like this...after the atom bomb blasts in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, radiation and fallout researchers noticed an interesting anomaly having to do with radiation sickness and poisoning and its aftermath, cancer. Those folks that were consuming miso soup before every meal were not getting the devastating radiation symptoms. After some time researchers started studying the phenomenon and concluded that miso contains substances that chelate and /or neutralize the deleterious effects of this most devastating of poisons, radioactive fallout. With continued research it was determined that individuals that consume multiple cups of miso soup on a daily basis have half the breast and stomach cancer rates. Children's Hospital in Germany reported that the genistein in miso deterred cancer cells from multiplying and pointed out that cancer of the prostate, brain and breast could possibly be prevented and treated with the antioxidant rich soup. Miso is a fermented soybean paste that sometimes contains rice and occasionally barley and since the 16th century has been part of the daily Japanese diet. Its nutrient dense profile has been touted to combat ageing, drinking and smoking along with cleansing the bloodstream of heavy metals and radioactive isotopes. Since it is commonly believed that cancer can only grow in an acidic environment, the powerful alkalizing effect of miso has repeatedly been mentioned and recent research has shown miso to be a potent anti-cancer agent.

Larry's Miso Soup Recipe:

I like using miso in all of my soup recipes. Recently I printed the recipe for my red lentil, carrot, ginger miso soup and I will say miso really works great in my Barley Shitake Mushroom soup as well as my Split Pea but today a basic Miso Soup.

Take a big pot of water, crushed wakame seaweed (purchase at any health food store), handful of tofu cubed, perhaps some grated ginger or garlic cloves, an onion sliced and a bunch of carrots. Cook until your vegetables are at soup consistency. Two minutes before it is done throw in a handful of watercress. After the two minutes shut off the flame and use a half to one teaspoon of miso paste per cup of broth. I like South River Brand Organic Three Year Mugi (Barley) Miso but there are many wonderful miso's available at your local health food store. Garnish with fresh chopped scallions. Don't make the soup too salty or you'll begin craving sugar. Miso is never cooked so that it maintains its natural probiotics. I usually use a third of a jar for a decent size pot of soup. You can change the vegetables you use for variety; I do like lots of different types of greens.
